Guest guest
Hi Amy, Hmmmm, he chooses the horse riding PEC. I just put Darwyn (age 5) on a waitlist for a special horseback riding program here. How long has Quinn been riding and how did he like it at first? Any tips for a non-horsey city mom? Thanks, What age did your child start communicating? Since there are so many parents with older children on here, I was wondering if you could tell me at what age your child started to talk or use communication devices independently? Or how many of you with older children don't have a good communication system at all? Quinn is five and pretty much has nothing. He will occasionally choose a PEC from two options for highly motivating things like horseback riding or food. I would love to hear about any kids who were really really late bloomers in their communication! Guest guest
Hi , I am also a non-horsey city mom! But my kids both love to ride horses! They both go once a week for horseback riding therapy that is done by an OT. We have a PEC board we tie onto the horse and it has Stop and Go. Quinn knows to choose Go to make the horse go. If he chooses Stop he doesn't get to move. The very first session he was extremely wiggly (started about a year ago), now he loves it and will sit up nice and straight and moves his body with the horse. He even stands up in the stirrups really well. He has a therapist and another person to hold onto him and also one person to lead the horse. It is the best money I have ever spent because he loves it so much and I think he gets something out of it. Let me know if you have any other questions. Guest guest
Hi Amy  I have just put in my application for Amy to go to therapeutic horseback riding. It is over an hour away but have heard some good testimonals from some of Amy's (my daughter) workers so thought we would try it since we don't have her in any activities. Do you find it beneficial? How often do your kids go? I've never talked to any parents who send their kids. I have only heard stories through Amy's workers so would love to hear a parent's perspective on this.  Thanks Ali Subject: RE: What age did your child start communicating?horse back riding To: Received: Wednesday, November 25, 2009, 12:37 AM  Hi , I am also a non-horsey city mom! Guest guest
, Austin has been riding for three years now and he is 7. At first he did not want to go near the horses and we just had to pick him up and put him on. Now he LOVES it and he cannt wait (he still does not want to be on the ground near the horses and frankly that is ok with me since I have a fear of him getting kicked) His strength and communication improved. He rides with another little girl with DS and it is the best influence on them, Austin look she's doing it. I don't have to be near the horses I sit and watch. I would recommend it to anyone, the program here is great! Guest guest
will be 7 in a month. She has not spoken, done signs, or done PECS or a communication device with consistency. I am really startinbg to get concerned as well. She will sometimes pick an icon, but she does not have any motivators hardly at all. > > > > Subject: RE: What age did your child start communicating?horse back riding > To: > Received: Wednesday, November 25, 2009, 12:37 AM > > > Â > > > > Hi , > > I am also a non-horsey city mom! Guest guest
I'm a city mom too, and we take not far from the city to therapeutic riding every spring, summer and fall. He loves it and gets much more verbal and has much better posture and body control on the horse. Beth Quoting Amy Banta : > Hi , > > > > I am also a non-horsey city mom! Guest guest
Tori was an early talker for those with DS and ASD. However, she did not start to walk until she was 2 months short of 4 yrs. Guest guest
My son has been doing therapeutic horseback riding since last spring and really enjoys it. He sings songs on his own while riding his horse, and verbalizes a lot. He seems to be making nice gains in trunk strength from it also.
