Guest guest
We are farther south than Okeechobee. Being closer to the ocean (we are 3 miles as the bird flies) though it would take 10-15 minutes to get there so long as the bridge isn't up. You said " God willin and the crik don't rise " I changed the crick to crik as that is how I've heard that. So are you from the Tennessee area or KY? I've sure heard that a lot from my mother as I was growing up. She also said, " What do you think this is, your birthday? " She said that to my sister once when it was her birthday but she hadn't been thinking of that. I said, " Mom, iit is her birthday " and we all got a laugh out of that. Only time we were able to counter her on that one. Whe she got mad our middle names all turned to " Ann " except for my brother's. Sometimes she would call us someone else's name, a younger sister, and later in life, the name of her dog. I sort of resented that. However, as I age I better understand it. At least her dog was cute. After anesthesia once she said that I was busy teaching " Mandy " , her dog, to read. That sure spooked my sister and gave me a lot more power than I ever thought I had. She always went a bit silly after anesthesia and it really frightened her. She never took that much medication and so it had a powerful effect on her. We are about 15-20 miles from Ft. Lauderdale, but closer to Pompano Beach. We planned to spend summers in AR, where my husband has kids, and we went there first when we retired and I was working on painting the place and getting organized as we got too much stuff delivered there. Then we got a call saying we needed to come back ASAP as Wilma had come through and took out 3 of our windows and pulled some of our roof up. So I packed off my husband and one of his sons who was not getting much work and I paid him for 3 weeks worth of work at about what he made. My husband paid more to get his truck here hich kept breaking down. They did get the windows back in and were without lights for a number of weeks before I came down bringin our grandson. They stayed here for some time and decided not to go back, but they did when summer came. We had found that AR was more hot in summer, had more bugs in summer than we did here. We had work to do here. We liked AR as it was beautiful with streams, lakes, etc. We were just a few tenths of a mile from the marina. I had planned to bring a pontoon I bought down but then my husband was negative about us getting it into the water. He is bipolar and then I was sick after a few months here and couldn't get around as well so we sold the boat up in Toledo where we were paying an arm and a leg to " board " it. Lot money of course plus the fees to store it. Then a slip came up at marina for $50 month, but no boat then. We like to go down ad rent a boat for a half day there as it is eally nice to take grandkid out and pull them around in a tube that comes with the boat. C ost of living is low there Food is fattening but good if one eats out. Nothing fancy there. Other than country music, not much entertainment. But we usually go to see things there more than we do here. We don't get rid of it as it is small, doesn't cost a lot to keep it and if this blows away, we will have a place to go until we save enough money to come back. If the bugs were eliminated there, I wouldn't mind spending that summer there and into the fall to see the beautiful trees. Medical care is a bit of a problem with both the psychiatric care and the dialysis care. We can't seem to find a place near there unless one of the small clinic type hospitals have something. Otherwise it is all the way to Little Rock or Searcy. (an hour or 1-1/2 hr away). So we stay here and just go there when we have some time and my husband is feeling good. We usually make a swing to MI to see his Mom (Holland, MI), oh and my son (Canton, MI) and then across to Branson usually only stopping at the Birkenstock shop there an then on dwn to AR. Kids are about an hour away so we drive down and take them to a meal or invite them up to go somewhere or to have them spend a day. We do like to go to the senior center for lunch as it is $2 and pretty good food but not as good as a year or so ago before the main cook went to the rest home. It was fantastic before then. There are 2 country clubs there and the food there is good and not really expensive. BBQ place and fried catfish places are not too far and I have acquired a tiny taste for catfish (like once or twice a year. We like to feed the carp off the dock at the marina which floats. They have the big mosquitoes that just come out at night so I can go to the pool earlier in the day. I am a magnet for the mosquitoes. Now why did you move. Was it just the heat? And what is the difference where you live? Were you inland or near the ocean? That is a big difference. I can drive over and it gets cooler when I get to the causeway -at least 1 degree and then when I get over by the ocean itself it gets 1 degree cooler. And past my house going west it must get warmer as it is a lot warmer in Orlando. I wouldn't live in middle FL as it is hot there. Guest guest
Jumping in on Florida weather....I'm originally from western NYS--home of the big blizzards and short summers! We moved to central Florida in 1993 and have never regretted it. Yes, it's hot in the summer, but so far we've had no snow storms <grin> and we utilize shade covers for growing our produce year round, as well as shade trees for relaxing time. We did face the hurricanes of 2004--we were closer to the ocean and lost our home (rated for a cat 4 but...got hit by Frances & Jeanne, 3 wks apart) so used the opportunity to move to Christmas, half way between Titusville and Orlando. We have no plans to move again, but if we needed to move to a colder climate, I would have heated greenhouses so I could continue to enjoy fresh produce year round! -- *Diane K* Heart of Christmas Farms http://hocfarms.com on facebook: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Heart-Of-Christmas-Farms/62673422893 on localharvest: http://www.localharvest.org/heart-of-christmas-farms-llc-M19402 On Sun, Jun 10, 2012 at 2:17 PM, Carolyn Wilkerson < carolyn.wilkerson@...> wrote: > ** > > > We are farther south than Okeechobee.
