Guest guest
Good morning from New Hampshire. I am the mother of six children, Staci (30), (26), (25), Jayda (9), Shayli (6 - w/Down syndrome), and Sophie (5). I am also the nana to seven grandchildren, Kendra (10), Tyrance & Terrell (9) (from Staci), Mady (7), and Keira (10 months) From & , and step-nana to Camden (10) & Austin (7) (from Staci & ). I am a full-time student with three classes left to go until graduation (w/a BA in Organization Management w/a minor in Social & Criminal Justice) and full-time stay-at-home mom. I have been concerned with my daughter Shayli's behaviors of late. She has a tendency to get 'stuck' on one object for lengthy periods of time, she shakes small toys, has to touch a certain part of the wall when finishing coming downstairs (all obsessive compulsive tendencies), and she has begun to be increasingly bothered by people looking at her. Her social skills could be greatly improved, as she prefers to play alone rather than with her peers. Academically she is doing well - she will be entering the 1st grade in a few weeks. She knows her alphabet (upper & lower case), as well as all their sounds. She counts to 50 with almost no prodding, she knows all her colors and shapes, and is almost completely potty trained. I am concerned that some of her behaviors may be pointing to autism spectrum disorder - but I'm not sure - no dr's diagnosis has been made yet. I am just starting to do a lot of research and reading to gain as much knowledge about this as I can - that's why I'm here! These behaviors are fairly new - within the past 6 months or so - so I am learning as I go. I tend to listen more than share so that I can gain as much knowledge from you as possible. I'm happy to be a part of this group & hope to learn a lot from you! Thanks for listening & thanks in advance for all your help! -Lori-

Guest guest
Hi Deanna: I have two kids with DS and PDD though as they mature it is more difficult to tell if they really have autism. The older one, now 14 has picked up the social skills he was missing and it doesn't really look like autism anymore though an evaluation this spring when he had a horrible teacher put his autism at severe. Then summer started and he has only a few signs of autism now. I say this only because our kids are so dependent on the environment - if the environment supports their learning even with autism they do well. If the environment does not support their learning then there is a lot more work for us! My others son was adopted at 3 (two years, eleven months) and while his autism " looks " more severe, he doesn't actually qualify for autism. Did that make sense? If someone looks at him they think autism but if you go through the checklist, he doesn't quite make it. You will hear a lot about a Dr. Capone on this list serve. He is considered the " expert " in Down syndrome and autism. He says that a lot of kids with Down syndrome have traits of autism. My other thought was that we have been following a therapy this summer from a Dr. Bruce . His research is in abused and neglected children and he has developed the neurosequential approach to learning. It has helped to bring Tony out of his autistic like repetitive behaviors but we have really had to work to find replacement behaviors. Instead of being in his own little world he has decided he likes opening the door to the house or the fence in the backyard and saying, " run dogs run " . Then we have to track down the dogs. He will also throw their balls over the fence and our ball playing dog will cry and cry until we run outside and help her get her ball back. It is definitely growing pains. He has gotten very sneaky about getting out of the house or getting the dogs out of the house. I have always believed that some of my boys autistic like behaviors are really related to attachment. We are waiting for an attachment therapist to join Tony in his OT, following the neurosequential approach. For example, it used to be that if Tony went into certain stores he would have a melt down and I thought that was autism. Something in the store was setting him off - a sensory issue. But we have learned this summer that nothing in the store sets him off. It is WHO goes to the store with him that sets him off. If he is just with me, or his brother and I, he is usually fine - typical kid. But if his Dad comes along he has a meltdown because he doesn't want Dad in a store, he wants Dad to play with him then we accidently reinforced his meltdown when Dad would take him to the car and sing songs to him. We are changing how we deal with him. We have always been structured and firm but now that we know what he wants more often, we can better explain it to him. It is amazing to see the acknowledgment in his eyes. I share this only because Tony's early years were so neglectful that the neuropsych who evaluated him said he was just like kids she had seen adopted from Romanian orphanages. Regardless of whether it is attachment or autism, I think if we find the right approach for our kids, there is a lot of hope. Looking forward to hearing more about your family. Guest guest
Hi Deanna, Welcome. As you'll realize soon, we're a very diverse group of parents with lots of different ideas. But we have all gone thru, and/or are going thru the stages of learning our child has autism and then learning to help them as best we can. I find this a very supportive group with great ideas and we share some quirky stuff. Nowhere else can you find others whose children might also like to lick fuzzy slippers, or watch the credits roll on their dvd's or have in depth toilet training discussions that would scare others. Take your time and don't feel you have to try everything all at once. We all have something to share and you can choose what works for you and your family. Also - if you let us know whereabouts you live, there may be some specific dr's or programs others in the area might know about. , Mom to (age 11) and Darwyn ( age 7 DS ASD and a few heart surgeries) , Canada Sent on the TELUS Mobility network with BlackBerry Hello Good Morning!
