Guest guest
I forget what DAN stand for, but it's doctors that specifically treat autism, I think. Celiac Disease is an allergy to wheat, barley, oats and rye. We think is celiac instead of autistic. I had him on a gluten free diet for 10 months. The wheat, oats, barley and rye have gluten in them, and gluten is a protein that I guess they can't digest. I had to make bread for out of rice flour, potato starch flour and tapioca flour and add guar gum (because the gluten is what makes bread hold together when the yeast rises). It's a tough diet to start, but you get used to it. I've heard of some kids actually being allergic to all grains, that would include rice and corn. On a gluten free diet, rice and corn is all can have. Guest guest
I am fairly new and really don't know how to navigate the web site very well. I know there has been discussion before about this topic on diets and supplements. Is there a way to access old info? Does anyone have any success to report on this? 's teachers have unofficially suggested that I read a McCarthy book. Another professional has told me that the reported successes were probably misdiagnosed to begin with. Still looking into this -- would appreciate feedback. Thnks, Rose

Thnks, Rose > Hi Rose, When reading directly from the listserve, over on the left hand side there are some links, once you enter go under Alternative Biomedical. Even though the McCarthy books are good read. I would actually highly recommend other books to understand some of the underlying causes or know what areas to look for instead of jumping into this approach. Sometimes when jumping aboard blindsided could do more harm than good. Books, sites I recommend or even watch YouTube are under s website. Nourishing Hope, Nutrition Intervention for Autism Spectrum Disorders, Why Diet Can Help and a Holistic Approach to Implementation, Guide for Parents & Practitioners. http://www.nourishinghope.com/ http://www.autismone.org/ http://www.autismone.org/content/autismone-radio Another good book is Children with Starving Brains, A Medical Treatment Guide for Autism Spectrum Disorder, by Jaquelyn McCandless, MD. Will not overwhelm you too much, there is already enough reviewing for now. May I ask which state you are at? There may be some families already on this journey who are in a similar road for when you are ready to go into further. Guest guest
Thanks Kathy and Cyndi, I am very interested in this topic as well. Kathy, would you please share what biomedical interventions you did? Our son's poop hasn't been solid for a long time.interested in what you're doing. How old is Kara and what is her diagnosis? And Cyndi - what are hyperbaric treatments and what is glutathione? We just had some tests done for at Great Plains Lab last month and are in process of consulting with their nutritionist since there are no DAN doctors out here in France. Thanks, Kathy (with Ben, 3 years old, DS-ASD and Genna, 9 months old, Phil - dear hubby) _____ From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of Kathy Calvert Sent: Wednesday, September 16, 2009 4:12 AM To: Subject: RE: Re: DAN doctors I will echo what Cyndi shared. We actually see Dr. Kartzinel who co-authored " Healing and Preventing Autism " with McCarthy (book released a few months ago). I would recommend that book for an understanding on biomedical intervention. We have been on this journey for just a few months but we have already seen a difference in Kara. She has stopped grinding her teeth, her pupils are no longer dilated, she is more focused, she is like she's " here " now instead of " in another world " (most of the time), her skin coloring is even better - oh, and her (sorry - tmi) poopy is solid now. Many of these things have been mentioned to me by friends who don't have any idea what we've even been doing. For us, this was a decision we made after much prayer. K. Re: DAN doctors Rose, I have been on this journey since April of last year. My son sees a DAN doc in Lynchberg VA name Dr. Mumper. Although my son is still non -verbal I have been told that it may take up to 2 years for language to start. takes lots of supplements, has done 40 hyperbaric treatments, Methyl B-12 shots, and glutathione in addition to gluten free casein free diet. All of this has made a difference in how my sons feels, how well he participates in learning, following simple request that he could never do,etc. I thank God for biomedical intervention because conventional medicine was letting my son down. Guest guest
Cyndi and Kathy, You've no idea how it warms my heart to hear from moms of dual dx kids on this list who are going the DAN route. My dtr is 20 and we began with a DAN doc when she was born actually...I should say the doctor " became " a DAN doc once there was such a thing as DAN. I'm on somewhat of a mission to seek you guys out....anyone else here doing biomedical intervention with dual dx? (besides our blessedly outspoken Irma of course). I don't know if you have seen the Autism Research Institute's (now autism.com ) parents report on the various treatments and their success rates (rated by parents)...it lists meds, supplements, therapies etc. and a % of perceived success rates. I always wanted to get something like this quantified for those of us with kids with the dual dx. As you know we can't always fit into the DS box, nor the Autism box; there are biochemical quirks specific to the dual diagnosis and I would love to see what others are discovering. http://www.autism.com/treatable/form34qr.htm I have to clarify that we've always pursued a judicious blend of allopathic and alternative medicine with as there is no denying her medical conditions (heart and GI problems and hypothyroidism). It's a tricky balance to maintain. Sherry

Even some of the families who are still not ready to jump into the biomedical approach are grateful for guiding them towards which Specialist to be seen by and some have been confirm with Celiac, so either way many of us with individuals with the dual dx's of DS & AU are growing, networking & thensome. Guest guest
I looked again for one in the Raleigh area. I think I will wait to do anything until I see Dev Ped Neurologist. She may know of one. > > Cyndi and Kathy, > You've no idea how it warms my heart to hear from moms of dual dx kids on this list who are going the DAN route.
