HI,

I took to a podiatrist today for his walking problem. He said it is

achille's tendon and he wants to fit him for leg braces and start physical

therapy again. Does anyone have experience with braces? He said the casting

might be hard to do. gets very scared and panics. I forgot to ask him

how long and complicated the casting for braces is. Any idea? Honestly I think

will just refuse to walk in them. He can be very subborn as you probably

all understand.

Hi,

My daughter needed casts for both legs.  Casting each leg took about 15 minutes

(each).  I was suprised.  The first few days were horrible, though, as she

adjusted to wearing them.  They did suggest Benadryl and/or Motrin and both

worked wonders (used seperately and sparingly or as needed).  After about the

7th day I didn't need the medicine.  The leg was needing to adjust as well.

She needed to wear the casts for 3 weeks.  They come off tomorrow.  Hurray!!!

The orthopedic doctor said it was either this, surgery now, or hip replacement

in the future (if this is not addressed now).

What is 's walking problem?  Zoe's problem was that she never stepped

down on her heal as she walked.  The area between where her feet and legs join

did not develop properly.

How old is ?

Zoe adjusted fine to walking in the casts.  They go from the top of her calves

to the beginning portion of her toes.

The casting for AFOs or SMOs is not long. Our orthotist uses a very

quick-setting material and it takes about a minute or two tops for each foot.

tolerates it decently, even with major sensory issues, but if we had to,

it's something we could hold him down and force if needed.

walks so much better in them and thus really prefers to use them. But he's

had them since he was tiny, so I'm sure that helps.

Good luck!

Virginia,

is turning 12 tomorrow. He also does not stop down on his heels. Do they

always have to keep the casts on before getting the braces? I thought it was

just for getting the measurements.

Hi Terry,

My son, , has trouble too when being measured for orthotics. A couple of

things that have helped during this process is bringing a portable DVD player

with some favorite videos (which diverts 's attention), as well as

preferred books or toys. Also- the orthotist's assistant and myself are ready to

hold 's hands and legs if necessary, while the orthotist takes the

measurements and does the casting (which is generally done quickly).

I would contact as many local orthotists in your area to see which ones have

experience with special needs children and explain 's needs in advance so

that everyone involved is aware of what to potentially expect.

I have to say that the orthotics have made a huge difference for (he has

had both AFOs and SMOs), so it is worth all of the effort.

Good luck and prayers coming your way.

Best,

Mom to , 5 yrs. old

My son has worn AFO's for a number of years. The measuring neccesary took

maybe a half hour . The braces themselves - first were ankle high but now

are full legs AFOs. Elie adapted to them very easily since his legs

immediately flet better (I think - since he cananot tell me).
