Guest guest
My son also has this problem. He used to leak when he was little and sometimes have a BM in his pants. This was before I knew he was ADHD and Autistic. I used to get mad at him and punish him, I always thought the problem was that he was too busy playing and just didn't care. Boy do I feel terrible now, very guilty. Now he holds it way too long and we fight a lot when I want him to poop. He also refuses to wipe and will not do so, I still do that for him. If it were up to him he would just pull up his pants and continue on. I really think he has a problem with smells, just like loud noises and bright lights. He always freaks out when he smells something he doesn't like. He takes a stool softener every day. I just hope this is one of those things that maturing will finally solve. s Mom > > > > >My 5 year old boy, (just recently diagnosed with AS) has had > >encopresis. > > Hi Leann, It's good to hear from someone else who has struggled with > encopresis. Guest guest
Hi , We try those disposable wet wipes with , to help ease the difficulty with wiping, but he refuses to learn how to wipe himself (he's 5). This is such a tough problem, and one that's hard to talk about to others (like teachers, family). It's really complex, too, since it involves both psycological issues (anxiety, fears) and physical problems. A tough nut. It's good to hear from others going through the same issues! Guest guest
Alison, You are right on when you say that this is difficult to discuss with people. I have even talked to his Pediatrician about the issue but that was no help either. He just recommended stool softeners, which takes, but that doesn't solve the real problem behind his reluctance to poop. Its one of the behaviors associated with Autism that I really hate, it really worries me that it will have a very negative effect on his health eventually. s Mom > Hi , We try those disposable wet wipes with , to help ease the > difficulty with wiping, but he refuses to learn how to wipe himself (he's > 5). Guest guest
Rob, we haven't really experimented much with diet. I wish he would drink more water but he probably doesn't have enough and he hates vegetables (except potato) and doesn't eat much fruit. A friend of mine is having problems with her daughter and was told she had encopresis. It started as wetting her pants but aparently when the bowel is full it places pressure on the bladder. Not sure if this is just with girls as we have never had a problem with wetting just pooping! Anyway, she has had her daughter on and off Parachoc for the last year and feels she is getting nowhere. So now she is giving her a cup of diluted prune juice every day which she thinks is helping. She has only had the problem diagnosed through her family doctor, not a Paediatrician, though. So maybe its not encopresis and her daughter never has an accident at kinder or swimming so she wonders if she has some control over the accidents. It is very difficult to live with, I am totally over the whole situation but I know it will improve in its own good time. Its a matter of patience I suppose. Anyway, I will keep you updated on the Prune juice if you like.
