Guest guest
Irma, thank so very much for sharing your adventures and outcomes. Sometimes we just have to say, 'here goes nothing', go in with a positive and adventurous attitude, trusting that it will all work out. My son and I have participated in community events such as you shared and much to my surprise, I ended up having as good a time as the young people I chaperoned did. They loved the event, the atmosphere, being with their friends (disabled and nondisabled). It was a learning experience for all and it wasn't even noticed as such. Anyway, I do appreciate reading about parents' 'adventures' because the really are special..Janet From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of Sara Cohen Sent: Sunday, June 14, 2009 8:32 AM To: Subject: Re: My Chaperon adventure Such FUN!!!! Guest guest
What a great story! I love seeing others with down syndrome out and about because they are so much just like everyone else. I loved my time as a special Olympic coach and just sharing their world through their eyes. Such great moments! Holly My Chaperon adventure Yesterday with one of his bro and I had an outing, first we travel to our usual location out to Austin to be seen by his Nutritionist/Homeopathic follow-up and all went well here which means cooperated wonderful. I was pleased with the recommendation which ease my mind as I have not really been a happy camper with the latest outcome with several of 's appointments last week. We even manage to stop at this restaurant which kinda of like a Sports Bar type but serves Gluten-Free Buffalo chicken wings. So picture loving this as there were of course " chics " , music and TV screens with all sorts of sports channel. This is normally a place I do not hang out but have already visit a place similar to it with my DH & in the past but this time wanted to take 's brother as he have never been to one. So my mojo was still in check and still doing great, lethargic but this is too be expected for what he is affected with his ongoing underlying medical issues. All this change though which was such a reminder just to step back and enjoy. Once we return home, had a little break, I had refreshen up as I was going to be for the very first time alone take to a Basketball game and Chaperon 5 other guys with Down syndrome. This is an event which our local DS organization coordinator for the adults with DS planned as an outing for them. All the girls with DS went with other parents who Chaperon. This was so that they could enjoy, hang out, and especially be out in the community applying some of their independence skills without their parents. Speak about such transition to tackle. Will you know me, unable to do this with YET, due to his uniqueness and challenging issues, will you know that " A " traits. Outcome of this was such a joy, LOVED IT!!! was smiling as the guys enter our van, yeah hanging out with the guys. : ) Remember they are individuals WITH Down syndrome. Their ages range believe up to 47 y/o. I did not know what to expect, so speak about my adventurous moment. My world has revolved around the dual dx's of DS & AU or just autism community. On our way to the event center, one of them all of a sudden started to ask one of his buddy, " Hey buddy, do you have a girlfriend " , speak about typical male conversations going on which just sparked of course my ears to listen. This is just like having my teenage nephews with me deja-vu here. Once we arrived at the stadium met up with the other group of girls with DS and of course the parents told me that they were all singing " Mama Mia " . : ) While watching the game, with OCD/SPD moments which I manage to work around, little does the other parent are aware of me working around this and around 's diet at the time which I had to stay on top of. Thought there were going to be some of the moments but did manage to redirect it appropriately and did not have to be caught wondering if I had to leave as I brought all the guys with me, so no panic mode here, thank goodness. I was also able to cheer away with the group and to observe , who is still not ready yet should I allow him to ever go on a next outing with the guys, unless I once again Chaperon. Other than that no melt down moments and watch actually attending a Basketball game was nice for a change. The guys were excited as I, that our local basketball team of women won the game. Awesome sports fanatic. On our way back to our drop off location where their parents were waiting for their sons. They had begun to talk which I did not ask, but there conversation was about how they live at home, their age, their names, about their jobs that they enjoy working at and one of them wanted to make sure and I paid a visit at the Pizza Hut he works at and meet his parents. About their siblings, their cell phones, about how they get to work (transportation) and one of them even told the other guy that he liked me as his girlfriend and the one who spoke the most told him " you can't have her because she is married " , picture me driving to and from just admiring this because this is what my battle within this past Legislation session was all about. To hear these guys carrying on a conversation was such an inspiration. This is about community choice. What a date with my son and the 5 guys. : ) Had to share our enjoy evening with them. When we arrived to our destination, some of the guys did not want to get off the van, they still wanted to hang out and this gave one of the sister who was picking her brother and a few of the other guys a thumbs up to observe this that they had an enjoyable evening. Taking off from the parking lot, just gave me a smile and placed his hand on mine as he wanted to sit in the front with me as well. If only I knew what was going on in his mind but it was a nice sense of feeling. Irma,20,DS/ASD
Guest guest
Irma, You are so wonderful I just do not know how you do it. It sounds like you to had fun too. Sounds like typical boys talking about girls, work, and home. I am sure that master was feeling pretty inspired being with peers. Austin is where my friend Helen lives and and the pictures she sent are beautiful there. That is wonderful that the resturant sells gluten free chicken wings. It is a nice break to not have to carry along the food once in a while I am sure. Guest guest
This is so true, I can imagine enjoying hearing the guys talk about the girls, etc. and pretty sure he can relate with them. It was a nice evening event outing. Even while at this restaurant I had to make sure to be cautious but indeed carry the chewable digestive enzymes. The waitress herself was even surprised that they had a GF menu and told us that her little brother was also autistic and just beginning the GF/CF diet. kept wanting to hug her and I was just trying to teach him to shake hands. Boy, does he have to play his numbers with girls, just do not want that wrong impression though. Irma,20,DS/ASD > > Irma, You are so wonderful I just do not know how you do it.
