Guest guest
Oh Irma you always have the best info, Mics school uses Sensory integration therapy along with the ABA and each child has his own little program adapted especially for them. The entire staff meets once a week to discuss each child and where their needs are.I just got lucky I think. My son was dx'd at a late age of 13 y/o with autism. It is never too late for when they are older. My son did not do too well on the DTT (Discreet Trial Training) this was too robotic which is more the Lovass, who is the grandfather of ABA. His methods were tweaked by other professors studying the behavioral intervention which is the Skinner's Analysis, so there are various types of ABA programs that one will benefit from. Nothing wrong also with the DTT as many will benefit from any type of a Behavior modification and if something helps, more power. My son did well with the Verbal Behavior approach which is to help break the skills, not too robotic, especially as he also suffers from sensory process disorder and processes the information with about 7 second delay. Like if you told him " hi " , then count to about 7, then he will make that connection, then will return a hi. The DTT approach was kinda of like placing too much demands which was not too motivating in my son's case. I remember when one therapist told him " hurry " , duh! The autism here, requires time to process. The Verbal Behavior Approach was more for him to generalize wherever he was at with some visual supports in his case. Totally agree, no doubt that early intervention is the key. But, it is never too late for the older kiddos to receive ABA, just have to find the right approach and therapist too. I would not stop here though, a combination with some sensory integration or other other combination could work also. Hope I did not overwhelm you with what I have posted. If reading directly from the listserve over the links file, there are lots of information to review and see if you are ready for it. Two books I recommend: The Out-of-sync Child, recognizing and coping with Sensory Integration Dysfunction by Carol Stock Kranowitz, M.A. the Verbal Behavior Approach, How to Teach Children with Autism and Related Disorders by Lynch Barbera with Rasmussen Foreword by Dr. Mark Sundberg. One comment I read was that > sometimes when it doesn't work that it is because the kids are too old. > My daughter is 13. This worries me. Any input as to if ABA has worked > when your kids were older??? > > Thanks, > Carla > _________________________________________________________________ Rediscover HotmailĀ®: Get quick friend updates right in your inbox. http://windowslive.com/RediscoverHotmail?ocid=TXT_TAGLM_WL_HM_Rediscover_Updates\ 1_042009

Laurie, I am actually enjoying reading your post, you & Mic have really come a long way. Have I mentioned how proud I am of you and totally with Mics positive update progress. It is all baby steps when finding the right approach. You are also suggesting some great wealth of information so you do not stay behind. Some of us will join in with you as we accept on what helps our kiddos, others might also benefit as well. This is wonderful when the entire staff meets once a week, this is staying on the same page and when one method does not work, glad that they are thinking out of the box to see what other goals to conquer. Guest guest
Our daughter is six years old and just started ABA therapy this past November (two hours per week). We are AMAZED at what she's finally showing us she CAN do - she's actually DEMONSTRATING what's inside of her! We've known it..it's just been trying to " get it out " of her! We are currently enrolled, for the next school year, in a private school that does ABA and we are truly excited about the possibilities (just trying to figure out the finances right now). My husband was just asking last night who taught Kara to turn the lights off and on..LOL...yep, her ABA therapist! Guest guest
Oh that is so great to hear because we think exactly the same way. We feel like there is so much inside just wanting to come out if we can find a way. I just hope I can find the right people to help!
