He is on seizure meds and we usually attribute to that but his pediatrician says that most ds kids have a lower white count. I don't know if she's right but she tells me this all the time. also limps once in a while and I never do figure out what is wrong. Last year he also had a strange rash on his torso and butt. I took him to a dermatologist and he said it was folliculitis was is common. I'm sure if we go to see his regular doc he would probably order one based on the odd symptoms and his history. I think I'll watch him tomorrow a.m. and then see what the report from school is - I'll probably call there mid-day. Dylan often has spells where he limps, for days at a time. I *think* it's cramps in his legs, but he can't tell us & we've been the doc & they've run all the blood work, x-rays, etc. & nothing amiss has ever shown up. Dylan also has rashes on his body often, weird prickly heat like rashes. So, hopefully it's nothing to serious. Although, I know how everything comes to mind, especially with our kiddos. I'm trying not to freak out but... developed this odd rash on his outer thighs about 10 days or so ago. I've been putting Lotrimin on it and it seems to be improving. It has never bothered him at all, doesn't seem to itch or anything. Looked like little round red circles. Then today I got a call from school at 2pm that he'd been limping all day. I went to the school and watched him from behind as he walked with his shoes and without his shoes. He was changing from dragging his right foot to picking up his right leg to stepping down more on his left - all as if he was trying to figure out a way to compensate for something in his right leg hurting. I couldn't make out if it was his hip, his knee, his foot, or if he'd had a stroke!!! Margaret - I kept the hip thing at the top of my mind. School said his behavior was completely normal, did everything that was asked of him, ate his lunch, played kickball at recess but limped all day. His Ed Tech examined him and he didn't wince at anything. I took him to the Doctor who came into the room and looked him over not to find anything. could bend his legs in every which way without any pain, nothing looks odd so he told me to monitor it. He admitted that he was a bit nervous we'd need to draw blood just reading his chart and seeing LIMP and reading that all his labs seemed to have been done while he was under - he suspected he wasn't an easy draw!!! Got that right! This was a doctor we had never seen before in the practice. He asked if the Urologist had done a CBC before surgery (the double hernia, undescended testicle surgery he had about 3 weeks ago). There was no CBC done. The doctor brought up leukemia but didn't seemed worried since didn't have a fever and had pink cheeks and lips. The doctor watched him walk a very short distance where, of course, his limp was not very noticible. He's still limping and I can't figure it out. Of course I had to go and google Leukemia just to make myself crazy again. In 2005 we went through a leukemia scare and had Leukopenia. His levels dropped so low that he almost had to have a bone marrow biopsy. They mysteriously improved and have been fine, other than always having a lower WBC than normal. He hasn't had a CBC in a while. SO...long story short. Those that have battled Leukemia, can you tell me the first symptoms you saw? Do you think I should head back to the doctor and ask for a CBC and to watch him walk for a farther distance? I'm a little freaked out but trying to stay grounded. I feel so bad for the little guy and for you. Since we mothers are the ones dealing with figuring out what is going on. What if he got something in the bottom of his foot? I stepped on a tiny rock and it made a bruise that you could not see but it hurt when I stepped on my foot for months. What if he twisted his ankle and slightly sprained it? Could be. I said thyroid because our kids are succeptible to thyroid problems and they can affect the feets,joints,etc. But don't freak out.Who has Lupus? Keep me posted. I will say a prayer. 's main symptoms were repeated illnesses and then a " rash " that wasn't on the skin, but dots under the skin, which I know now are called petichea. Does 's rash look external or under the skin? did not have the limping because he wasn't walking yet, but many kiddos do get leg pain before diagnosis. Having been through leukemia, I have get labs now whenever I have an inch of worry; he had them twice during a recent illness and recovery. No doctor ever questions me; they understand the risk of relaps and the need for a " cancer mom " to get the reassurance of a CBC. I would urge you to go ahead and get the CBC, and if the symptoms don't improve, get another one in two weeks and compare. If it's leukemia but early, the counts may or may not look bad, but as time goes on, the white counts go up and the hemoglobin and platelets go down. His pinkness now suggests his hemoglobin is fine, which would be a good sign, and it's probably nothing, but a CBC never hurt anything. Hugs. Know I'm here if you need any more leukemia info. When Jake had his scare they sent me immediately! The rash Jake had an the Petichea looks like broken blood vessels and they can be very dark or very faint. They can also move from one place to another. Jake's were under his arms and on his torso. I am with Beth on getting the CBC because even if is a hard stick, it is worth the peace of mind for your health, and if God forbid something is wrong, you catch it early. We also had to do the second blood test to check his counts. I also did confirm with Dr. Capone about the low white blood cell count with kids who have DS. This is common that they are lower than the average bird. However, like you said, was too low and that was a serious problem. Again, with his history I cannot beleive this doctor did nothing. Can you take a picture of his rash and post it? I know you and your handle little camera. Also, have you thought about Lyme diseae. When Mia had that her rash honetly looed like paisley print all over her body. The doctors said that it could not be Lyme. Guess what.....4 months later, they were proven wrong! Lyme disease rash is not always on the torso and it is not always like a bullseye. Dr. Holly recommends, a CBC work up and rest for Jayne! I have another friend who has lived with Lupus for years.
