Well, over the last few weeks, I've been dealing with this issue myself, so I thought I'd share a bit of it.In August, had a couple of days where I awakened with some blood on my sheets, in the absence of any activities that might explain such a finding.Ultrasound showed a 1 cm diameter stone in the kidney, which actually, I was happy to see, as my pathologist's mind was happy with bleeding and no pain.   Had a lithotrypsy, where they Waring Blender the stone with ultrasound, and spent a week on Rush Limbaugh's own home remedies, pissing the asteroid belt.  At the end of the week, I did a 24 hour urine collection.  Impressive how the lab has this all set up.  Mailed my piss to Texas.Chemical analysis of the stone shows it to be predominantly uric acid, due to protein breakdown.  Usually, and enzyme system should handle this, but for some reason, it isn't doing it's job.My urologist, a really smart and cool guy, suggested that 80% of people will respond to increased hydration, and a reduction of protein in my diet.   He asked if I were taking any protein supplements, and was seemingly a bit surprised I said no.  Also suggested a reduction in acidic beverages.   As potasium chloride seems to alter the urine chemistry enough with out all this mess, I'll probably opt for pills over diet.
