*Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors* (*SSRIs*) are a class of

antidepressants <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antidepressant> used in the

treatment of depression

<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clinical_depression>, anxiety

disorders <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anxiety_disorder>, and some personality

disorders <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Personality_disorder>. They are also

typically effective and used in treating premature

ejaculation<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Premature_ejaculation>problems

as well as some cases of insomnia.

SSRIs increase the

extracellular<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extracellular>level of the

neurotransmitter <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neurotransmitter>

serotonin<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serotonin>by inhibiting its

reuptake <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reuptake> into the presynaptic

cell<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Presynaptic_cell>,

increasing the level of serotonin

<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serotonin>available to bind to the

postsynaptic receptor. They have varying degrees of

selectivity for the other monoamine

transporters<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monoamine_transporter>,

having little binding affinity for the

noradrenaline<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noradrenaline>and

dopamine <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dopamine>

transporters<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transporter>

..

The first class of psychotropic

drugs<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychotropic_drugs>to be rationally

designed <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drug_design#Rational_drug_design>,

SSRIs are the most widely prescribed antidepressants in many

countries.[1]<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Selective_serotonin_reuptake_inhibito\

I love the last line " rationally designed " . Does that mean that others

were not rational??

Anyway - copied this from WIKIPEDIA as a quick easy to understand resource.
