Guest guest
Again: the problem with bracelets or necklaces is that some of our kids cannot tolerate them. Ditto adding devices to shoes, backpacks, belt loops, etc with the added issue that items can be removed - as our shoe tossers will tell you. My son, for example, checks every item of clothes before he will wear them and then checks them continually while he is wearing them. Guest guest
My Noah has been known to take off a few times on us, and it has got to be one of THE scariest feelings imaginable. He is non-verbal so its not like he will answer back when called out to. He even climbed out a window once. Not sure where he is trying to go, he just takes off. My thought was that he may just become sick of having someone constantly on him that he just tries to get away. He hasnt done it in a while, but the possibility is always there and that in itself is scary. We even considered getting a companion dog for that reason, they are trained to warn when our kiddos are headed out, they will stand between door and child and bark to alert someone, and when they are tethered to the child with the use of a vest, they are trained to use their body weight to keep them from running off. Problem, the cost of a professionally trained autism companion dog, about $13,000. The site I visited offered many ways to raise the money, but we just werent sure about spending that much on a dog. Guest guest
Leilani and all- Over and over again as I read the threads on this group I feel so thankful to be a part of it. It is such a relief to know that others are facing the same issues...that it is not just us. Our , also in non verbal. We also looked into those companion dogs. I think it is a great idea. But the $$$ is just too much. And I can't imagine asking our friends for money for this. Especially since we adopted internationally just last year....I can imagine people thinking " if they can afford another kid, they can afford a dog! " (Although it is not so black and white) Recently we adopted a German Shepherd puppy, Guinness, with hopes of working with him ourselves. It is funny, because isn't thrilled about the " puppiness " of Guinness, so at the moment just the thought of Guinness on the back porch has kept away from that door! Am I fooled into thinking that I am going to have a full fledged top of the line service dog? no. But I am hopeful for the GSD protective nature of kicking in. We would not have dedicated ourselves to this if I didn't want to care for the dog reguardless. I had GSD growing up...and this was a great way to get my DH to agree to a " big dog " ! heeheehee And guess who loves Guinness? Yep, DH! I am thankful to be reading about the different things that are available and definitely going to be checking out all the possibilities. Thanks to all that are contributing to this thread. Even if it is only a story about when your child has gotten out and how frightening it was...it is so nice to know that these things aren't just happening to us, that we aren't doing something wrong. Guest guest
Hmmh, a dog-but boy the costs? I hadn't even thought about that. I think that's also a great idea. I should make up some flyers and bring some treats to the fire department and the police. She started to wander off this morning again but I was able to get her before she got too far down the street. Just installed a top lock on the door as well as I think my 4 y/o unlocked the door! Guest guest
Sara, Yes I know is always irritated at the hospital when they try to put a bracelet on him. They could make clothing or shoes with a removable stay that the child could not see. would never wear a hat but after fighting for 2 days 2 years ago he now wears a helmet to protect his head. I never believed would wear the plastic head piece like Buzz lightyear to do HBOT but he did. I was amazed. I know that will sometimes surprise me and I lost once and was devasted. He got out the screen door and was gone 15 minutes but it felt like a lifetime. Everyone was looking for him and I felt like I would have a heart attack. We live on a busy road and there are lakes just down the road. I called the police but was afraid that they would think I did something to him. Well after all that he was standing in the driveway next door. I hugged and kissed and hugged and kissed him. I know to well the feeling that goes with losing a child so we need to come up with a something. My reason for being against microchipping has do with government control not against safety. One things seems to lead to another in this country. As an animal lover I would never do it to a pet either. Sometimes this country is to quick to jump on the newest thing whatever it is without knowing the consequences latter on down the line. But every person should have their right to decide in everything that concerns them and their life. I do not believe in right or wrong it is what works for each of us. Personally microchipping scares me. You are a great mom Sara and you have great advice and you are always helpful to me and I just hope that I can be that helpful to you if you ever need it. Have a great day. Cyndi B > > Again: the problem with bracelets or necklaces is that some of our kids > cannot tolerate them. Guest guest
We have deadbolts on all our doors and we even have locks on all our inside doors. Everything is keyed to the same key. Our keys hang up high on a hook and we have signs on our outside doors that say " Please help us keep Jake safe. Lock the Door. " We do have our entire yard fenced, thanks to $ from MHMR. So far Jake throws toys over the fence but does not realize that he can climb over the fence. Oh, an our fence has a locking clip that is to hard for Jake (and sometimes me) to take off to get out of the gate. Holly Re: Tracking Technology & Protecting Kid Hmmh, a dog-but boy the costs? Guest guest
We bought alarms at Radio Shack which emit a 90 plus decibal sound - Elie HATES that sound. HE learned real quick that the flashing red light meant the alarm was set. PROBLEm was that I didn't always remember to set the alarm. > We have deadbolts on all our doors and we even have locks on all our > inside doors. Everything is keyed to the same key. Guest guest
Hey Miss Holly, How did you get MHMR to pay for fencing? Is it chain link? We are in the process of putting up our fence, but it is really stretching our budget. Leilani Re: Tracking Technology & Protecting Kid Hmmh, a dog-but boy the costs? Guest guest
We actually decided not to use the respite funds that come with " wrap a round " services in PA, which come through mhmr, medical assistance, etc. I am not sure who it all comes from but Mhmr does all my paperwork. Since they are so picky about respite (you have to pay out of pocket and then submit within 30 days or you lose it) I just gave up. I am not quick to get paperwork done and we do not go out enough. So anyway, I gave up all my other funding to just get help with the fence. That was our biggest concern with Jake. We live on a road that is busy at times and people just speed through here like they are diving to heaven or something. Anyway, We put the fence up ourselves so we saved a lot of money but they put up big chunk of change also. It was awesome and has made our live and Jake's so much better. He loves to go outside now and swing and we can watch him from the kitchen and the dogs can be outside with him and he just plays in the yard with his toys. He likes to slide, swing, and climb up in his tower. He has even ventured down the doggie paths where they run. It is cute to see him walking after them since most times he wants nothing to do with them. Once again I thank ToyStory for help with the dogs. ToyStory 2 has the dog and Woody plays with him. Wish they would do a ToyStory3. I find that with any service that lends money, if you know exactly what you want, have the item number, phone number, and price, and at times are willing to give up a little something, they usually will approve things. So far, we have gotten our fence help, we got a little scooter for home, and this past week we got 3 folding gym mats for down stairs in our basement (we have 2 therapy swing we can't hang because of concrete floors) and then we got the wonderful snuggle cushion I told you guys about early. I love my MHMR contact, we even email each other things and keep in touch. Just another thing that helps. I send her any information that others might like to have and she forwards things to other families. Share share share... Holly
Guest guest
thank you so much for teh info, our coordinator and I are close as well so im sure she will be more than willing to help us out. We are in the same boat with respite. We rarely go our because there really isnt anyone willing to watch Noah plus two other children, so we stay home or lug em along. I will see what we can do about our fence, thanks.
