Guest guest
Back in June I wrote to this group about my son Aidan and the health concerns that were emerging. Well, suffice to say it was a long summer but Aidan is well!! Tests were ran, xrays, ct scans, bloodwork, stool samples and it was finally determined that Aidan had bleeding in his belly. The specialist figured that he probably had a perforation in his duodenum that had been repaired at birth. His hemaglobin was at 62 and he was so severely iron deficient that the exploratory scope could not be done until he was stronger. So we spent a day at hospital with Aidan hooked up to IV - first 2 units of iron infusion, followed by 3 unit of blood transfusion. We left after a very long day - although I will need to find a way to pay the producers of the numerous Barney videos that Aidan watched all day non-stop! - with Aidan appearing pinker and healthier than in months. A few weeks later, Aidan was admitted to the hospital, put under general anesthetic and the doctor performed an endoscopy. Much to his surprise he discovered some very large and nasty looking bleeding ulcers in Aidan's esophagus! Ah-ha!! Now we know why he sometimes gags and falls to the floor almost choking at the dinnertable - heartburn - really bad heartburn! And, of course, the bleeding caused his hemaglobin and iron to drop so badly. So the dr cauterized the ulcers and put Aidan on medication for a year to heal and prevent a recurrance. And, yippee - I can get this medicine into Aidan without him knowing - yet!! We were so very scared at the beginning of this - thanks to all of you for your support and prayers - it feels like it was such a " minor " thing now but, whew - I wouldn't want to go through it again. I am in awe of those of you parents who have been through the " real deal " . I'm sorry that I didn't update you earlier - we also managed to get away on a 2 week camping holiday to our east coast - New Brunswick - where we went whale watching and beachcombing on the ocean floor at low tide. Thanks for being such a great group! /diane st thomas ontario diane “ You must be the CHANGE that you want to see in the world” -- Mahatma Gandhi
