We are trying to do this with a student from Vietnam. At least she will get

the chance to come here, be company for Tori and be able to help a bit with

chores, etc....

Hi Liz,

The HS foreign exchange students that I have been familiar with get very

involved with extra curricular HS activities, sports and clubs. They establish a

network of friends at the HS and are barely home. You become the chauffeur,

chief cook and bottle washer. They will do their laundry, keep their room clean

and maybe help with the dinner dishes, if they are home, but expecting them to

do other chores and spend time with Tori is a stretch. Know what your getting

into before you commit to a teenager in your home.

Char: I take it you have done this before? This girl has never been out of

VietNam...and loves to do community work.

Liz, most HS exchange students enter the US for the first time. Community work

may or may not include your family household in the student's mind. It's just

something to have an open mind about. It takes a lot of energy to have a

teenager in your household. The return may not meet your expectations. If you

are paying this girl, a respite stipend, it may work. It's just a few

suggestions to consider. I have foreign college students in a work and travel

program, some years are better than others, depending on the students and the

customs of their country. I fired my two Turkish students last week.My neighbor

hosts foreign HS students. She is a school psychologist and her husband, a HS

principal. She has had the same results as I, some years better than others. The

HS students are rarely home, involved in many activities. She has terminated

three out of 14. The usual teenage behavior, drinking, sneaking boys into their

bedrooms and repeatedly violating curfew. Good Luck

Oh, Char! I know how teens are. BTDT with my older 2 (28 yrs. and 22 yrs). I

am thinking I may give her some " extra $$) if she can help with Tori. If I

don't think it is working, back she goes. I have been very open with the agency

and with our letter to the potential student as to what we are seeking as a

family..

Thanks for your points!
