Guest guest
Hello I just joined this group. I have a daughter Abbie. She is now 13 years old. She is a student at THE BOSTON HIGASHI SCHOOL which is an international school for children with autism. She started in June of 1998. She had been in inclusion in the public school, then a self contained classroom and now she is in the best school ever!! http://www.bostonhigashi.org/ She is verbal but does mix up pronouns and cannot really make conversation. She is very obsessed on certain things (not too much at school) and is social to adults rather than children. (although inappropriate) My problem at home is her obsession with clothes. Rather than wear it she is into my clothing and carries it around. She prefers to be naked and she is TOO old for this. Re: Hi everyone. I'm new here > > Hello Carol, My daughter is low functioning and did not talk at 3 yrs. > old . She is 14 now and has quite a bit of speech going . She still does not > talk to strange people . Guest guest
Hi Carol, My daughter is 3 1/2 and has really started talking more in the past six months since she turned three. I think it is hard to see how doctors can say if a child is low functioning or high functioning when they are so young - go with your gut instincts - I'm sure your child will be verbal one day. My daughter aged 10 also does not like to wear clothes. As soon as she gets home from school, or from outside playing she runs inside and takes everything off except her panties. She hates her bra, knows what its for, but finds it uncomfortable. It is embarrassing especially for my husband and father. We try to be firm with the bra, and am still working on it. You're not alone, that's for sure!!
Guest guest
Today I dressed up Abbie in a pretty dress and did her hair. I took some pictures of her. Then we went over to drop something off to a friend. On the street there was a family I knew having a yard sale. They also have a little girl with autism who is about 6 or so. Abbie as I said is 13 years old. Abbie picked out some dishes and was very good about it . We put her and the dishes in the car and I started talking to the women about the school program her daughter was entering this next week. All of a sudden we both realize Abbie was sitting in the car with the dishes playing in her bra and panties. Thank god she had those on since people were all around looking at things. Definitely a developmental issue. Some children just do not get to the stage of development that has modesty at all. When you have a girl doing this it is worst. Re: Hi everyone. Guest guest
I think they do not mean low functioning due to speak but in daily living skills or in developmental areas. If a three year old is at the stage of an 8 month old (as Abbie was at that age) in gross motor, cognitive etc skills that are developmentally delayed and most likely considered to be low functioning by professionals. I am not sure what is low functioning and what is higher any more. Abbie is higher functioning in some areas than some kids who are at her school in the way of understanding , following directions and being able to learn daily living skills. The school has taught her how to dress herself , brush teeth, hygiene etc. Some kids can do all those things but do not speak and others speak but do not make sense. I think they look at the developmental stages of all children and see where the child is who has the autism. Most are caught in the sensorimotor stage of developmental and have not reached the pre-operational stage if you have ever studied Piaget the Child Developmental Theorist. Re: Hi everyone. Guest guest
Abbie is fixated on clothing but not wearing them. If she does she puts on my clothes or my mothers. She love other people clothing. I have a picture scanned of her with her obsessions . If anyone wants to see it I can email it to you. Some people do not have the ability to get or want picture attachments but let me know. She took all of her sister's clothing (a teen and a crabby one at that) out of her room and put them all over my bedroom floor. I took a picture before the teen from hell saw it. When she came home she went in her room and said " who told you to clean my room!!!?? " Re: Re: Hi everyone. I'm new here > > , that is 3 of us with daughters who hates clothes .
