Guest guest
And where was discharge planning before you left the hospital to arrange for nursing care to come change his dressing and check the drainage??? You could still get that doctor to write that you MUST have nursing care at the minimum for that, but probably should also have 3-4 hours a day to help wtih his ACL including bath. Guest guest
Margaret! You are too funny. Without a sense of humor, where would we all be? Liz Funny for today Hi, Everyone.....I got an unusual phone call late this afternoon. It was from a lady who quickly said her name and where she was from. I didn't catch all of it because I was in a VERY frustrated mood having just gone through one of G's 'loops' for the umpteeth time today. She asked me if this was the home of Gareth? " Yes............and you can have him if you'll take him. " She chuckled and wanted to know how we pronounced our last name.......Roof. OK........... " Like the top of your house " I said. " Who are you, again? " Turns out she was the case manger for our insurance company and was calling about G's hospital stay/treatment. " This call may be monitored for quality assurance " she added. She laughed at that and said she has in front of her that he is DS/Autistic so she 'understood' where I was coming from. She wanted to verify what he had done, how the hospital stay was, and did they arrange for any help at home? I laughed at that one!!! " Nooooooooooooo " " Well, what do you have to do " she wanted to know. I told her I had to help with all of his toileting, that he has @50 stitches in his backside and can't sit, that I have to take care of his drainage tube, change the dressings/paddings, help with his showering, dressing, help him transition to his walker, etc. " " Why does he have a walker?!?!? Guest guest
And, tomorrow social services will be here to take my kid away........yeah, right!!! You are so right, Margaret. There had been a rash of social services calls to homeschoolers.? Mostly the ones who had children with some special need or other and the parent decided to withdraw their child and homeschool.?? We had recently moved and I remember thinking , " I hope my new neighbors don't decide that I shouldn't homeschool and call in on me " .? Well, that did not happen, even though we are surrounded by teachers in this neighborhood but I had to laugh because I figured just one day.....just one, sending Birgitta to school would be enough for them to send all my kids back to me. ?Blessings, homeschooling Mom to AJ (13), (9), ^l^, (age 6, Trisomy 18 mosaic AKA 's syndrome) and Birgitta (age 5, adoption finalized 2/1/05 !!, Trisomy 21 AKA Down's Syndrome, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, Autism, SID) Funny for today Hi, Everyone.....I got an unusual phone call late this afternoon. Guest guest
Have a little check in time with y'all this mid-morning. Staying out here in Elkhart now with one of my brother-in-law and his wife. First time to check out an Amish community out in some shipawana, something like this, close enough. Hubby has to head back to work and this will be his first International flights since the 911 attack, so he will be taking his laptop with him. His sister is still at the Hospice and they gave every family member a book called Gone From My Sight, The Dying Experience, it has helped understand these stages. Just keeps getting weaker each day. Some of the Canfield family members were able to all meet at a restaurant for 's birthday yesterday evening, so he was able to have an enjoyable one. My goodness, reading this post, it is true, if anyone walked in your shoes right now Margaret, they will know that their problems is nothing compared to what you have on your plate. Hope this person has access on seeking some supported services your way now that you have filled in just what you are having to do nursing your son's health back to some comfort zone, if it would help. This does not even include the daily challenges & unexpected issues. Yep, always something & unusual. Irma,20,DS/ASD > > Hi, Everyone.....I got an unusual phone call late this afternoon. Guest guest
So sorry for your sad time. But happy that got his birthday after all. If you have time - check out what the Amish community does to educate/tecah their children with cognitive disabilities - they had a separate school in PA where I lived. And were able to teach most of their community to do SOME useful work. Very interesting. > Have a little check in time with y'all this mid-morning. > Staying out here in Elkhart now with one of my brother-in-law and his > wife. > First time to check out an Amish community out in some shipawana, > something like this, close enough. > Hubby has to head back to work and this will be his first > International flights since the 911 attack, so he will be taking his > laptop with him. > His sister is still at the Hospice and they gave every family member a > book called Gone From My Sight, The Dying Experience, it has helped > understand these stages. Guest guest
Hi Sara, I does sound pretty interesting, thank you for sharing this. One of the reason why this was suggested to visit out at the Shipawana (?) community because of 's special diet and boy you could say it was such a Blessing to purchase actual food items that he could eat. When we first arrived, I did give in on allowing him to eat whatever given to him and of course faced the consequences, sure enough he did have some set backs and the paternal side of the family were just surprised to see how much it affected him. Since finally making sure he eats what he should, this morning he awoke on his own, doing things independently, not showing any aggressiveness, etc. It's been emotionally draining and of course working around him, has been stressful. My hubby called in, not flying out anymore due to his sister's update, unpredictable not knowing but yesterday did not look good at all. Today will be meeting with the counselor and discussing about the funeral arrangements among the family. She has requested for cremation and this will also take some process around it, learning with the flow here as this is new to me. No telling when we head back to Texas and it is nice to have back on track, really learning how to improvise. Will definitely look into more of the Amish living, thanks! Well, hubby of course tells me need to move out here. I know I will not be able to manage during the winter time, visiting is fine for me. Guest guest
INDIANA in the WINTER???? Not - not - not!! But there are some Amish communities in more pleasant climates. We of course are familiar with the Lancaster, PA (MUCH better than Indiana.) There are also at least 2 colonies in Ohio. Bob got his idea for the bread making from some Amish neighbors of ours who are always experimenting with natural foods. Oh your dh meant because of family???? Different altogether. > Hi Sara, > > I does sound pretty interesting, thank you for sharing this. > One of the reason why this was suggested to visit out at the Shipawana > (?) community because of 's special diet and boy you could say > it was such a Blessing to purchase actual food items that he could eat. > When we first arrived, I did give in on allowing him to eat whatever > given to him and of course faced the consequences, sure enough he did > have some set backs and the paternal side of the family were just > surprised to see how much it affected him. > Since finally making sure he eats what he should, this morning he > awoke on his own, doing things independently, not showing any > aggressiveness, etc. > It's been emotionally draining and of course working around him, has > been stressful. > My hubby called in, not flying out anymore due to his sister's update, > unpredictable not knowing but yesterday did not look good at all. > Today will be meeting with the counselor and discussing about the > funeral arrangements among the family. Guest guest
Sara, so this is why Bob is good in making bread, how authentic. I at least know that they are made from scratch and are delicious. Did find a store here called something like Down Under, so I was able to get some Gluten Free/Casein food items. I am already debating to leave tomorrow back home as I would like to be back in my comfort zone depending how does, had some blasted poop city, bummer. If I hung around was going to try to head out to Chicago to visit my niece or nephew on Monday, still with an IF depending how things are going here. My BIL who we are staying with told my hubby that he would be pulling his hair out by now for what he has witnessed what we go through and this is really minor compared to the challenges we all go through. It does make a difference when others get to see the other side of our life not be boring and why we do what we can Sounds pretty huge up North with the Amish community scattered among these states sounds like. Guest guest
There are other AMish communities or Old order MEnnonites. One of my favorite communitiies is outside Waterloo, Ontario in CAnada. They mostly drive, but very plain cars with blacked out chrome. Let's be clear tho - many Amish have miserable diets heavy on carbs and fried. But then there are others who are aware and interested in more healthy eating - and they grow the stuff to prepare healthy food. > Sara, so this is why Bob is good in making bread, how authentic. > I at least know that they are made from scratch and are delicious. > Did find a store here called something like Down Under, so I was able > to get some Gluten Free/Casein food items. > I am already debating to leave tomorrow back home as I would like to > be back in my comfort zone depending how does, had some blasted > poop city, bummer. > If I hung around was going to try to head out to Chicago to visit my > niece or nephew on Monday, still with an IF depending how things are > going here. > My BIL who we are staying with told my hubby that he would be pulling > his hair out by now for what he has witnessed what we go through and > this is really minor compared to the challenges we all go through. > It does make a difference when others get to see the other side of our > life not be boring and why we do what we can > > Sounds pretty huge up North with the Amish community scattered among > these states sounds like. > > Irma,20,DS/ASD > > > > > > INDIANA in the WINTER???? Guest guest
These Amish community grow their own food out here. No way can I live like them, too spoiled with society's living versus the life they live. We had stopped at some restaurant and my BIL's wife was mentioning different type of Amish community compared to others like they are a little more liberal. I guess depending if cooked from scratch like if cage-free chickens, grass-fed animals and heavy on carbs or fried depends back to portion side. My grandma was not Amish but reminds me of the homecook meals from scratch indeed. All I know the world is pretty unpredictable just never know, interesting though how others live. Here you had a taste of it. There is some Amish craft fair going on next week but may end up missing it, something big which I have heard. Guest guest
Irma, You and your family are in my prayers during this very sad/difficult time. Kuddos to for making adaptations, despite the change in environment and routine! Best, Mom to , 4.5 yrs old DS/PDD-NOS To: @...: itcanfield@...: Thu, 24 Jul 2008 16:01:45 +0000Subject: Re: Funny for today Hi Sara,I does sound pretty interesting, thank you for sharing this. One of the reason why this was suggested to visit out at the Shipawana(?) community because of 's special diet and boy you could sayit was such a Blessing to purchase actual food items that he could eat. When we first arrived, I did give in on allowing him to eat whatevergiven to him and of course faced the consequences, sure enough he didhave some set backs and the paternal side of the family were justsurprised to see how much it affected him. Since finally making sure he eats what he should, this morning heawoke on his own, doing things independently, not showing anyaggressiveness, etc. It's been emotionally draining and of course working around him, hasbeen stressful. My hubby called in, not flying out anymore due to his sister's update, unpredictable not knowing but yesterday did not look good at all. Today will be meeting with the counselor and discussing about thefuneral arrangements among the family. She has requested for cremationand this will also take some process around it, learning with the flowhere as this is new to me. No telling when we head back to Texas andit is nice to have back on track, really learning how to improvise. Will definitely look into more of the Amish living, thanks!Well, hubby of course tells me need to move out here.I know I will not be able to manage during the winter time, visitingis fine for me.Irma,20,DS/ASD> > >> > > Hi, Everyone.....I got an unusual phone call late this afternoon.> > It was> > > from a lady who quickly said her name and where she was from.
