My name is and I am mother to 4 kids. My oldest,

has ds and autism. She is 13 (almost 14). I am at my wits end with

the school system. We have been fighting them to evaluate her for

AUTISM FOR YEARS and they keep blowing us off saying oh well she has

mental retardation, she can't have autism. Well, her tics and anxiety

have gotten worse over the last year or two and it has become more

apparent to everyone that she has it. we got the screening tools and

got her two teachers to fill them out along with me. she scored high

enough on all three of our forms, yet the special ed coordinator

wouldn't entertain the idea that this could possible happen. there

are no experts in dual diagnoses here. a couple so called experts in

autism, but when I tried to make an appt with one, after telling them

she has ds, I was shut down.

Anyways, we had her 3 year eval, and IEP 2 weeks ago. they labeled

her moderate and shut down my request for change to autism. Her

teachers both have years and years of experience in teaching kids

with autism and downs & told the coordinator that was as

Autistic as ANYONE in her class so how could they make that decision

without observing her??? I am sooooo disgusted and am waiting for

due process since I did not sign the IEP. We told the lady, who did

not have a clue, that her main disability is the autism and that

people approach kids with autism in a totally different way etc...

I need advice on what to do...Please help!!
