Anyone have Dr. 's number in Austin?

Re: IEPs ARDs and Making the Case for ABA

Again, I'm new to this list, and there is a lot I'm still

learning about my son's PPD and what our options may be.

Do you really think that the school district has the resources

to give your son the kind of individualized education that

you're talking about? Instead of fighting a system that can't

give you what you feel he needs, why not just leave the system

and take him to a private school?

It seems to me that you're expecting too much of the public

school system (not disparaging public schools), to expect them

to spend all that time, resources, and EVERYONE else's money, to

give YOUR child a special individualized educational program,

when no one else is getting such treatment. That's what

montesori schools are for. It's one of those beggars (or

tax-payers, in this case) can't be choosers kind of things.

We recently took our son to the Callier Center for Communication

Disorders, where Dr. Theresa Nezworski () evaluated

and diagnosed him with PPD in the Autism spectrum. Cost a

bundle, but well worth the incurred debt. As part of her

evaluation, she spent a few hours observing him in the PPCD

class. She suggested that we keep him in PPCD next year if

possible, because he is so comfortable there, and because they

have children in his class with a variety of disabilities, and a

general, but well organized approach to learning, as well as

some individual attention to speach therapy. She said it was

good for him to be able to interact with some children who were

able to communicate better than him and didn't exhibit some of

the autism behaviors that he does, so that he can learn

appropriate social interaction from these children.

A recent RISD evalutation concurred with the Callier Center

evalutation. Not exactly the best news to receive, but it was

nice to hear the same thing from both places, as this gives us

more confidence that they have the correct diagnosis.

We are amazed at the progress our son has made over this past

school year. I really think that they do a great job of setting

goals for him and tracking his progress. I'm always so excited

when I read his progress reports and see that he has actually

accomplished a goal or goals. It makes me want to cry.

As a referrence point, my son is 5 (will turn 6 on 12/25), and

has now completed two school years in PPCD at Dover Elementary

( ISD). I understand your frustration, to a degree.

I remember the somewhat helpless feelings that I had when he

wasn't progressing as fast as we thought he should be, and

didn't know where to turn.

Best of luck in your quest.<

Blessed be,

:-)

Thank you and Gaylen for responding with the info. I just got off the

phone with Dr. s office and the wait time right now is about a month

long (not bad compared to some other offices/doctors). I was advised to make

my appoinment a couple of months prior to arriving in Austin.

Thank you, Hope
