Re: HOOOOT 'N HOT!!

Hi everyone,

I'm Charlotte and I'm new to the board. My son is who is 5 that I

wrote about and asked about ABA. We are in Haverhill, MA. Anyone from

MA?? It was 94 today and is supposed to be 97 tomorrow. I'm really

enjoying reading all the messages.....it makes me feel like I'm not

alone in this DS-ASD journey.

Welcome Charlotte and . this list is friends, supporters, and people

who have " been there " or will be soon. Tell us more about JAcob and your

family if you feel comfortable.

Is JAcob an only child? What kind of schooling is he receiving now?

My son Elie is 23 in July. He is the youngest of 6 children. My husband

anad I retired with Elie from PA to GA 2 years ago. We love where we are

and desptie some " issues " regarding services, are finding what we need and

people to support us as we age and Elie is aging out of our home.

Tuesday we start our new journey- to help Elie find a home of his own. We

are meeting with an agency who helps people with disabilities find homes of

their own and WORK that they like as well! We are very excited to start

this new journey. Will let you know how that pans out.

It was brutally hot in CT too. About 36 school districts closed and sent

students home early. Most schools do not have air conditioning in CT. Many of

Zeb's classes are in air conditioned rooms so I decided to let him stay. He also

has trouble with the heat. I plan on sending him to school tomorrow but will

pick him up early. I would keep Kayla home. It's not worth risking her health.

temperature and I'm scared that if they keep transporting her in a hot

bus she'll get heat stroke, especially during summer school.

Now here is a question: Is heat regulation a DS thing an ASD thing or just a

brain damage thing??

Elie also had very big problems with heat regulation as a toddler and thur

at least Middle School - altho I claimed he had this issue still all thru

H/S. But I notice now that isn't a problem.

Just wondering!!??!

You know my daughter gets red and larthgic and does not sweat much. I think

we have to be especially careful of our kids. I wonder if it is a DS thing?

I have heard of at least two kids(DS) who had heat related death.

I always tell the teachers to be especially watchful of her in the heat and

to make sure she gets plenty to drink. I send in extra juice and water and

they are careful with her as well. Her class has been having p.e./recess

inside and only going out for about 10 minutes when they first arrive to school

when the weather is less than 100 degrees. You know when you have thyroid

issues, you are more susceptable to heat exhaustion as well. Speaking from

experience.

Zeb's school does not have air conditioning. There are a few inner core rooms

that do have air. Zeb's school had early release today along with most of the

other school in the state. Most Ct schools do not have air. School is usually out

for the summer when the high heat starts. They put in window air conditioners

for summer school in some of the rooms. I picked him up a few minutes early

rather than have him ride the bus without any air.

Kayla's class is air conditioned, but the gym isn't. I remember last

summer it was so stuffy and hot in there. I hope they don't take the

kids outside too much because they are not allowed to put sunscreen on

the kids (I guess because it's considered a medication?) and it doesn't

do any good to put sunscreen on Kayla at 7:30 before she gets on the

bus if they don't go outside until after lunch! I'm pretty sure the bus

was air conditoned last summer. The driver told me that they gave her

an older bus and the AC wasn't working. :(

Elie has NO health issues now . He is heart healthy, no thyroid problems,

but he does not perspire much. He gets fire red in the face wehen he gets

too hot or dry.

But now that he is an adult, we do not see as much of a problem as we saw in

schoo. OF course, he NEVEr rides in an una/c vehicle now that he is out of

school and he doesn't live or work without a/c in the summer - but our

school kids are expected to.

If I remember correctly, it is related to the DS.

Cyndi, if I asked the school to keep him in air only room with a dr's note they

would. It is documented that he has heat issues already so they do their best in

a school with 1200 other students. Everyone's feeling the heat.
