Guest guest
It's possible that your son is not getting enough melatonin- maybe he's irritable in the am due to either disrupted sleep during the night or sleep that is not " deep " enough (minimal REM sleep). Both our local neuro pediatrician and Dr. Capone from Kennedy Krieger concurred that between 3mg-6mg of a time-released melatonin supplement would be fine for my son. We have to crush it in applesauce for to take it. Dr. Capone mentioned that the efficacy is compromised somewhat when the tablet is crushed, but not dramatically. It's worth pursuing a couple of opinions. BTW, we use the Natrol brand (1 mg. time-released tablets). The 1 mg. tabs may give you flexibility, in case you son needs only 2 mg. vs. 3mg. We ordered it online. Best, To: @...: MTZAHN@...: Wed, 30 Apr 2008 17:14:02 -0400Subject: Re: melatonin Maybe I am not giving age 10 weighs 70 pounds enough to see adifference. Guest guest
, We used to have to crush Logan's pills, but are now able to give them to him, one or two at a time, in a spoonful of yogurt. We used to " hide " them, but know he knows they are there, he just cannot swallow them without the yogurt. You may want to give that a try. _____ From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of McDonnell Sent: Thursday, May 01, 2008 7:59 AM To: Subject: RE: melatonin It's possible that your son is not getting enough melatonin- maybe he's irritable in the am due to either disrupted sleep during the night or sleep that is not " deep " enough (minimal REM sleep). Guest guest
's sleep study doctor told us that he can have 15mg of Melatonin a night. He is about 100 lbs. This seems to help him. When he is in a really bad cycle with sleep and behavior I will give him an Advil PM for 3 or 4 nights in a row to get him sleeping again. Guest guest
Mostproducts which use the term PM in the name include Benedryl (diphenahydramine) in the contents. Advil PM has 38mg of Benedryl in it. My son took 50 mg of Benedryl from the time he weighed 80 lbs and was 11 until he weighed 150 lbs and was 16. When traveling by plane, he still takes at least 50 mg, sometimes 75 mg. just prior to loading - which only keeps him calm and almost stuperous on board. That waya the plane noises don't make him uncomfortable and this keeps cabin staff comfortable. Elie had sleep apnea until surgery at age 10ish took out HUGE tadpole shaped adnoids and large tonsils. Then he just had sleep problems - couldn't or wouldn't sleep. He started Benedryl about 1 yr after surgery. > 's sleep study doctor told us that he can have 15mg of Melatonin a > night.
