,

I have taken melatonin years ago and I had a druggy after effect

from it.

Studies have shown that it can cause depression in some people. I

just avoid it.

It may work for some, but I tend to get depressed at times and avoid

anything that may make it worse.

is going to start on a low dose of lexapro, we have tried

abilify, which caused tremors, to scary. ahh...

Good luck!

For my kids yes!!! They both are crabby pants. The oldest was falling into a

depression from it. We stopped it and she on remron and so far seems to help a

bit.

Dayton takes Zoloft and we just bumped to 50mg and amazing the difference in 3-4

weeks time... he not nearly as anxious and easier to transition.

We just started abilify and stopped the depokote about a month ago.. and he

saying 'words' now. It is a amazing drug too!

5yr DS and ???

Have any of you found that melatonin actually made your kids irritable the

next day?? Just curious also anyone here had their child on zoloft ever??

We are on depakene, zoloft and trazedone to help with sleep (which it does

NOT). So we are going to stop that. I cant tell that zoloft is making any

difference at all. He is sick with allergies and sinus infection and has

been VERY defiant this week both at home and school.

Thanks

We stopped the depokote for Dayton because I did not want to draw blood every

3month to check liver function. It takes nearly 6-8 people to hold him down and

not worth it to us. Abilify works the same as depokote in some way and actually

can see it works better for the mood swings we go through. The tantrum before

could last hr or two now we are at 5 mins top 30mins. depending what set him

off.

We do the zoloft at night because makes him 'groggy'. He goes to bed normally at

7- 7:30 and sleeps 12 hrs. We give him 1mg of Risperdal at night too.. helps

with agression all the next day. Risperdal moves slowly through his system. We

do .5 mg of Abilify in the morning and around 4PM....This will work about 9-12

months... then something will be upped or changed.

This help any?

I will keep this email filed for later as Logan is on Risperdal and

Trazadone at night and .25 of Risperdal during the day. He also takes

melatonin at night. It seems to help him and we have not seen the

depression. What is the Abilify for?

Thanks . It is so hard since is non verbal. I have no idea

what sets him off sometimes and when he is sick or not feeling good it is

even harder. Then how do I know if it a side effect of the meds. I am

always questioning myself.

I too think NDSS needs to do more to acknowledge our DD children. Our

worried and conerns are sometimes different than just the DS family.

was irritable on melatonin when we used to high a dose. When he

was ten and about 40 lbs we used about a 1/2mg. We cut a one mg pill in

1/2.

For a tiny dose of any med is often more effective than

a " normal " dose.

Hi all. I finally have an appt. with the Neurologist this coming Monday

to discuss Haylee not sleeping through the night. I have used Melatonin

in the past but never up to 3 mg. before and it did not help. Well, at

the beginning of this week i decided to crush up 3mg. of Melatonin and

give it to her before bed and shes been sleeping all night! Do any of

you use 3mg. or higher for your kids? Haylee is almost 7 and weighs 40

lbs. Im still going to keep my appt. becuase you know she will start

waking up again if i cancel :)

Maddie is 14, and weighs about 125. She gets one 3mg tablet a night. She

also takes .5 abilify nightly which helps with sleep, among other things.

I think your fine. I sometimes think that our family doctor thinks we

practice Witch Craft with Logan. He sees a sleep specialist, though, and

she used to say 3, up to 4 mg. Now, she says up to 6 is fine because he is

heavier and taller. She said that there is no chance of addiction to

melatonin and the efficacy does not wear off in time like it does with other

medications as it naturally occurs in the body.

We used to use the spray that you did, by Source Naturals. I, too, am

currently using the CVS brand as I had it on hand when we ran out of the

spray and it worked - " if it ain't broke, don't fix it " . I am not sure how

much help the neurologist will be as Logan has never seen one. You may want

to see if there is a pediatric sleep specialist in your area - I have no

idea where we would be without her.

Good luck!

,

Just be cautious down the road when giving some type of sleep aide for

the male hormones, this could cause erections like a Viagra effect

now or later as they get older.

These are the side effects, review the label on it or speak to a

pharmacist.

A lot of people think that because something is

natural or herbal is safe but some of these products can alter the

effect of other medications. Of course I am not an expert but that is

my suggestion.

On another note, glad for all those who have mentioned that the

Melatonin has worked for your child and of course you do what you

gotta do but wanted to share our experience on what my son and several

of my friends " son's " underwent.

Several of my son's circle of doc's recommended Melatonin and there

was some side effects. Yes, true every individual are different but

when there is something going on, question to ask is " What is the root

cause, creating this challenge? "

Read the material which is included especially when giving Melatonin

to the " males " , have not heard any side effects with the females.

There are some research out which I do not have on hand at this time

which has proven with the side effects my son had experienced and I

had consulted with my son's pharmacist at the time and sure enough he

gave me his input on any of the sleep aides, even those that were

prescribed as I had seeked this route too. Especially when his MD kept

wanting to up the dosage of the prescribed med recommended, this is

when I had to consult with the pharmacist.

Just be cautious and follow your gut instinct.

It seems most of our children with the dual diagnosis go through the yo yo

sleeping. My daughter knock on wood ,has not done this since she turned 5.

She is almost 7. She does get up everynight though and crawls in the bed with

me. That is ok though because she sleeps through then. I remember how bad it

used to be though. She would get up and nothing could get her back to

sleep. Sometimes she would have laughing spells and other times crying or back

and forth. We were all miserable and did not think it would ever end. But God

bless we have a repreive! I think sometimes it is something they are going

through and just can not communicate to you what is bothering them so it is

difficult for them to sleep just like it would be for any of us.

Irma,

Thanks for the reminder. Luckily, our sleep specialist has discussed this

with us, but at this point is a non-issue, but I am sure could be soon.

Yes, my son, , uses 3mg. of the time-released melatonin- it enables him to

sleep through the night.

He is 4.5 yrs. old and weighs 36 lbs. His neuro-developemental ped. told us we

could go up to 6 mg. if necessary.

Definitely check w/ your doc to see if this would apply to Haylee's case.

's doc believes it is a benign supplement.

Good luck!

Best,

Mom to , 4.5 yrs. old

Hi all. I finally have an appt. with the Neurologist this coming Mondayto

discuss Haylee not sleeping through the night. I have used Melatoninin the past

but never up to 3 mg. before and it did not help. Well, atthe beginning of this

week i decided to crush up 3mg. of Melatonin andgive it to her before bed and

shes been sleeping all night! Do any ofyou use 3mg. or higher for your kids?

Haylee is almost 7 and weighs 40lbs. Im still going to keep my appt. becuase you

know she will startwaking up again if i cancel :)
