there was a mail in recent days discussing the role of PIs in the

absorbtion and storage of Carbohydrates as Fat.

Since going on treatments in June Last year I have put on 20 Kg after

spendiing a lot of money and time losing same.

I am seriously needing to bring my body weight down by at least 45kg to

get back into a healthy physical state and if I can offset absorbtion

due to PI's it would be great.

Dear Graham;

Almost all calories that are stored are stored as fat, whether ingested as fat,

protein, or carbohydrate. Only a small fraction will be stored as glycogen.

It would be interesting to know why you started PIs. In a naive patient, it is

possible that the metabolic stress of fighting disease before drug was making

you burn calories at a high rate, and you now aren't fighting that battle as

much. If you haven't decreased your caloric intake, you will gain weight. To

a lesser, or greater degree, the same could be true for a change in meds for an

" experienced " patient.

PIs may contribute to abnormal fat distribution, but I don't believe they cause

weight gain, per se.

Unfortunately, as we all no to well, the best way to avoid caloric absorbsion is

to restrict caloric ingestion. Please discuss this with your doctor, make sure

nothing else is going on, but for all it's unfortunate cosmetic impact, my guess

is that the weight gair is part of a picture of improving health.
