Guest guest
Kayla's school nurse just called and they won't let Kayla back until she is certified worm free -- which will be in THREE WEEKS. ARGH!! I'm so annoyed. That means she's not getting any therapy (except for her 1 hour of home ABA). She was out most of February due to weather and colds and now she's going to miss nearly all of March! I understand their concern, but SHEESH! It's not like lice where it's going to be jumping around. The aides wear gloves when changing diapers and are very good about sanitizing everything. I think it's more the " ICK " factor than any real health concerns. Guest guest
When was in cancer treatment, we had it in his IEP that if he was out more than 2 weeks he would qualify for homebound services. I don't think it's automatic, but if you request it, they have to consider it. You can call a case conference to discuss it, and they have to show up. Guest guest
There are different types of roundworm. Do you know which type Kayla has? My son had Toxocara. He got it from our dog. It is very common in dogs and cats. But it is not transmitted from person to person therefore no reason to be excluded from school. He took the same medication that you take for pinworms but instead of one day you take it for three days (sorry I can't remember the name of it). He did not miss any school. Did Kayla's doctor say she had to be kept home? You may want to check with your local health department what precautions need to be taken. If they say she is not communicable to others than she can go to school. Here is a link to the Centers for Disease Control regarding Toxocara http://www.dpd.cdc.gov/dpdx/HTML/Toxocariasis.htm By the way it is estimated that 14% of the population has undiagnosed toxocariasis - see link http://www.dpd.cdc.gov/dpdx/HTML/Toxocariasis.htm I quickly looked up the other type of roundworm (Ascariasis) in " Control of Communicable Diseases Manual " and it states it is transmitted by ingesting " infective eggs from soil contaminated with human feces or from uncooked produce contaminated with soil containing infective eggs, BUT NOT DIRECTLY FROM PERSON TO PERSON OR FROM FRESH FECES " . So again if she is not communicable, why is she being excluded from school. Here is a link for Ascariasis http://www.dpd.cdc.gov/dpdx/HTML/Ascariasis.htm Again check with your local health department on whether she needs to be excluded from school. Hopefully this helps. eckidatri wrote: Kayla's school nurse just called and they won't let Kayla back until she is certified worm free -- which will be in THREE WEEKS. ARGH!! I'm so annoyed. Guest guest
Hi Ecki, Check on your state's homebound regs. You may be able to get a few hours of services home. Guest guest
worms don't fly. Pin worms are nedemic in humans - I believe the last statistic I saw was that over 60% of us have pin worms all the time. Round worms are treatable and again are pretty much in the human host. I wonder what the health department in your state has to say about worms and school? Sounds like someone has 'made up a rule'. We have had kids in school with HUGE tapeworms expelled (at school) and they still stayed in school. > what kind of worms pinworms? round worms? Guest guest
Kayla has ascaris. They had no idea what it was at Urgent Care until one of the doctors from South America saw it! One of the weeks she is going to be out happens to be Spring Break, so they said she's only really out for two weeks. Never mind that she missed a lot of February because of snow and colds! I think it's just the " ick " factor with changing the diapers. They found the first roundworm there and I think it just freaked them all out. Personally the only one I've seen is when they showed it to me in a speciment jar at Urgent Care. I don't know if that's good or bad...either she only had the ONE worm or the meds aren't working so she's not expelling them. Guest guest
Sometimes with the meds, the worms die and are reabsorbed as waste and expelled in feces - unseen. > Kayla has ascaris.
