Guest guest
, My daughter was in a brace for two mnths before she got casted and it didnt correct it, it just held her curve in place. Before we got the brace though, when she had no treatment, her curve was getting progressivly worse. With casting, my daughters curve has gotten 46 degrees correction!! I just think you have to research all your options and this might be one of them before moving right into surgery. Good luck at Shriners and with your sons appt. Hopefully, his curve hasnt gotten much worse. Melinda Mommy of Marlycia 11 mnths, Natalya 25 mnths Scranton, PA kinda freaking out a bit. Well we are now less then 1 week away from seeing our spine specialist here in Vancouver. it has been 8 months since we were put on the ist and it almost here. last time we had x-rays done was 4 months ago and Thaddeus' curve was 41 on to 50 on bottom. im really afraid of what it is now. his back doesnt look as bad as it did but he can now sit on his own so i think his muscles are stronger. Also i already know that this Dr. does not believe in casting.. he thinks it causes rib deformites ect. so i know we wont be talking about casting. im hoping i will get him to order the MRI so we can atleast get that on the go. We are also hoping maybe we can get a brace made so we can keep his curve the same. Today i recieved my package from Shriners and we have a appointment on Feb 10/2010. its going to be crazy traveling so close to the olympics(busy busy)im really hoping that he will be able to be casted when we go down there so we wont have to wait longer and travel back down there in a month or something. Hey you never know... maybe just the brace will work! i dont think so but ya never know. I just dont know what this Dr is going to say. He is a great Surgen but.. thats all he does. i know he is going to try and convince me to not do casting but i hear all these good things from all you ladies and i cant ignore that. i know casting will work. Thaddeus responded really well to his leg splints ect for his Muscle Contractors. I cant wait to get some answers and get our treatment on its way. 2010 is going to be a awsome year. with some great correction for everyone!! Oh i feel overwhelmed... cant wait till Tuesday Jan 5/09 then shriners here we come in Feb... :SMom to Thaddeus 11 Months
Guest guest
Hi ,Which Shriners were you accepted at? Hopefully your spine doctor will order the MRI and you will have it to send down to Shriners with other medical records to review prior to your appointment, then they could review and see if your child is a candidate for casting and schedule the casting and save you a trip. Please go with your gut feeling and give casting a try. PLEASE don't let this spine specialist talk you out of it, like you said, he is a great SURGEON. You don't want surgery!!We wasted over a year with the "BEST" pediatric ortho in our State. He never mentioned casting AND even after we took our daughter back in her 1st Mehta cast, he said the same thing, " you are going to end up with deformed ribs." Well, are daughter's ribs were already deformed from the rotation and now they look normal!!It is true the old style 'risser' casts used to deform the body/ribs, but with the EDF/Mehta casts this is avoided with the proper cut-outs. I would go to the files section on CAST and print up both the Mehta article "growth as the corrective force", as well as the recent article 2009 by Dr. /D'Astous on 'derotational casting" and give both of these to your spine surgeon. This might help him understand that we just aren't deforming ribs!!Good luck!!
