Guest guest
Hi , will be 16 in May, he still cannot write his name, he can type it on the computer, and he also uses a name stamp, we still work on it but it may never come. Viola: Do your kids write? Logan's writing has actually gotten worse and he cannot even write his own name unassisted. However, he is growing in so many other areas, I do not want this part of his learning to hold him back and frustrate him. Am I wrong? Couldn't he learn to use a computer or some such device and still spell, read and be able to get along in our society????? **************Ideas to please picky eaters. Watch video on AOL Living. Guest guest
Trisha is still learning to write but in her case it wasn't until this past year that she had an OT that discovered she her hand manipulation skills were underdeveloped and she only had 4 emerging skills and 6 unmastered skills and usually by the time a child is in first grade those skills have all been mastered or at least almost mastered.? I am pleased to say that they did another this past month and now she has 3 mastered skills and 7 emerging skills.? Back to your question, yes they can function very well using computers or other writing programs/instruments.? We are working on keyboarding with Trisha so that she can type out what she isn't able to write.? In her communication we use many different modes called total communication we do the same with her writing skills.? Most dynamic AAC devices have some writing ability now and it's getting better each time they come out with something new. Carol Trishasmom She isn't typical, she's Trisha! Guest guest
How old is Trisha? This is exactly what my DH and I have been talking about. Still having him learn to write, but using a device for his learning of other things. He currently does not use any AAC devices at school. _____ From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of Csvillars@... Guest guest
Thankfully when Isaac was in first grade (he is in 4th grade now) they started letting him write all of his assignments on the computer - mostly to keep him busy rather than a healthy view of inclusion but it worked. While he could only write his name by hand, on the computer he wrote sentences and two and three line stories. Writing is one of his favorite activities and he continues to write stories and poems even when not required. His handwriting has improved, maybe to a first grade level. For Isaac, it isn't just a matter of having the skills to print, it was/is also a motor planning issue. When he would write a sentence it would be all over the page, never in a line from left to right. He could read it but no one else could. The computer is his friend. They even turn off spell check and let him do his spelling tests on the computer. Good luck with this. The computer is so important to Isaac that if I had to buy him a laptop for school, I would. Guest guest
Hi ~ Dylan is 12 and finally just started writing his first name. He can not do it on command, but if left alone on his own he will come out and show me that he wrote it. Becky " L. Davenport " wrote: Do your kids write? Guest guest
Elie can write his name, first and last in block. He can copy block printing both with a pencil and copying using a keyboard. Does he understand what he is copying, beyond his name? NO. Was it worth all the years we spent getting him to do various work sheets? Looking back - NO. All the years we spent trying to teach reading? No - But reading I would try again if I could find someone interested in experimenting 1:1 with any method. Only because reading for pleasure would be another enhancement to his life. Guest guest
a is 10 and still can't write, unless it's hand over hand, which she isn't crazy about. One of her goals this year is to be able to cut a straight line with a pair of safety scissors. Her hands are real fleamsy. Guest guest
nathan is also 16 and can not write, he knows how to spell his name and can type great, but the handwriting part just isnt coming, but we still work on it and its in his IEP. We've tried several different programs nothing to avail as of yet, the DS clinic said he may never write. thanksfully we started the typing and letter tiles and stamps way back in elementary school, and he is able to use them readily. shawna Re: Writing Hi , will be 16 in May, he still cannot write his name, he can type it on the computer, and he also uses a name stamp, we still work on it but it may never come.
