I now have a circle of friends with kids (whoops - young adults) with

autism. ALL OF THEM have emergency ativan plans for oral or rectal ativan

if their family members go beserk (from the BESERKERS of old Europe

legend). Recehck with 's docs as to WHY they won't give you an

amergency supplie.

I spoke to two of my circle friends just this evening (evidently this time

of year is a high violence time ) one has 30 tablets of ativan, the other

has 60 tablets on hand all the time.

I think (hope) that once I explain to them what happened and how helpful it was

they will see the light. They gave us only 10 tabs (with 2 refills). I'm glad to

have the information that so many other parents have found this necessary and

helpful. I will bring that up with the doc also. Thanks. It's like it just short

circuited the violence and upset; I was afraid she would sleep all day but she

only rested for a short while then got up and went about her usual stuff. I know

Ativan is specific for panic attacks. It was a perfect med to simply reroute the

insanity. Thanks for the input.

I have one " bud " whose son now goes to work with Elie. Her son is 6'2 " , 180

lbs. She is 5'2 " - and I won't tell you her weight! HE knocked her against

the door yesterday - and it was just flailing - no direct attempt to hurt

her. He took an ativan and 20 minutes later was watching re-run football.

He needed another one 6 hours later when he got upset again - to the point

of yanking the phone out of the wall. She does not use this often but in

the past 2 weeks she has used it 2x in a day three times. NEw work, new

weather, holiday season, change of weather - who knows!!???

Tonight Miss Birgitta had some paper in her mouth.? We are crazy packing for a

move and she got a book.? She decided to eat it.? I grabbed her and made the

stupid mistake of trying to scoop my finger through her mouth.? Normally I can

do this, no problem, quick and easy.

Well, I am so focused on packing this house that I just was not quite on the

ball.? She clamped down and nearly broke my finger.? I screamed so loudly she

let go.? I have her lovely tooth mark where she broke the skin and I?feel like

my knuckle is broken it is throbbing so much.??

So I poured some alcohol (rubbing) on the opening and then some alcohol (wine)

in my mouth.? DH is with her now as I needed a break.? Who would have thought

this little tiny, petite child could cause so much pain?? Thank God she is small

because I?could not handle her wildness if she was bigger.?

I have spoken to the Docs about meds for as PRN. Something new

that they are also going to try in a med used for drugs addicts,

alcoholics and the reason: many believe our abusivie kiddos get an

opium type release that makes them feel good when they hit. This med

has helped with other opium additions and has worked on some kids.

They are going to try on Naltrazone. Has anyone tried this one

yet? Cyndi B

, when I brush 's teeth I have to be careful not to put my

fingers in his mouth. He almost bit my finger off once. I know your

pain. When was little we were leaving K-Mart and the door alarm

went off on something I just purchase. I turned around to go back

into the store and he leaned over on my arm and bit the skin.I wanted

to scream but I was in a store. My skin streched like rubber. My mom

said give him a swift slap on the arm to cause an instant letting go.

But I was afraid someone would scream child abuse of a disabled

child. That was many years ago when could still ride in a

shopping cart. Over the weeked we were returning from a family trip

and as we hit our exit gots so made he threw one of his new toys

and it hit my daughter in the side of her head. Now he was not trying

to hurt her but he was upset that we were coming home. My daughter

loves her little brother but it hurt her head and she cried. Today he

gave her a big hug and a kiss. These children are innocents mentally

challenged children that do not know their own strengths. They

strength is the kind of adrenaline that can lift cars because they do

not know how to reserve their feelings. I wanted to hospitalize him

to get meds under control but husband is against this. He is afraid

they will put a child like Mason in the room with out .I

do not want to put our child in jeopard of abuse but he is getting to

big and strong for me to be able to handle when my husband is not

home. That is if gets upset and mad. I know there is no easy

answer and we all have our cross to bear but some peoples cross seems

a whole lot lighter. Has anyone hospitalized their child to get

behaviors under control? Cyndi B

My firend who shares driving to work with me, came and took Elie at 6:30

this morning. HEr son was in the back seat, but I could hear him yelling

from the house. She told me tha the was having a meltdow and she dowbted he

would get on the bus.

Well, she called me at 8 AM and said that not only wouldn't he get on the

bus, but after returning home, he threw the xmas tree, unwrapped presents,

broke a window, and she was waiting a call from 's doc to see what

next???? He had his extra Zyprexa and ativan but it hadn't touched him.

Whne I suggested that MAYBE he needed hospitalization, she got really

quiet. Seems when he is away from home, he stops eating, drinking, goes

catatonic - which is why he isn't in an out of home placement.

There is one blue sky to this greness. I now know that my life could be

much worsee. Terrible to think that way.

Cyndi, we've never tried naltrexone but it's been around for ages. There's even

a new protocol for LDN (low dose naltrexone) which is being used for Crohn's

disease and other treatments for autism. I believe there's a yahoo group for

LDN.

Sherry

PS let us know how it works!!

I know of a few kids on naltrexone and it helps. One word of caution,

if the person is seeking the feel good sensation and don't get it

they will try harder for a period of time before giving up. Make sure

you are going to be able to deal with an increase in behaviors for

awhile and keep the person safe since they may self-abuse to a point

of injury.

When was about Birgitta's age she clamped her teeth down on Dad's chin and

could not be unhinged. To this day I admire him greatly for not having wounded

her in some way. She was just hanging there (he had picked her up and was

holding her). She tried to bite my boob yesterday. I am so covered in scratches

and bruises today.

The really cool thing that she did tho was to drag me while screaming and

hitting all over the house trying to show me what she wanted and she went to all

the cupboards in the kitchen till we got to the one with the otoscope (which

ordinarily she hates). This is actually a big tho painful step as she was

telling me it was her ears that hurt! She's never done this before. Last month

she started lowering her pants to show the therapist that she had a big boil on

her bottom....most of the time we don't notice them till nighttime and can't

figure out why she's so upset.

So after all these years she's able to tell us a couple of body part pains. Sure

enough the doc this AM confirmed ear infection. All three of us are no longer

the Muhs family but the mucus family now. The family that blows together goes

together I guess.
