Regarding Paxil/Paxil CR...

My daughter, initially on Paxil for OCD, was switched to Paxil-CR

(=controlled release) because of side effects - there were some

reports of fewer side effects with Paxil-CR. While this wasn't the

case in our family, the only difference between Paxil and Paxil-CR

is that the CR form is in an enteric coated, timed release tablet.

The chemical structure is otherwise the same (I just looked it up in

the PDR). Because specific indications take an exceptionally long

time for approval from the FDA, I believe that the OCD indication

for the CR formulation of Paxil might just be lagging behind the

indication for the 'regular' Paxil.

Just my opinion, but I didn't want you to worry any more than you

were already worring over the weekend, Judith-

Hi Pam...

According to the PDR, the dose for Paxil is 20mg - 50 mg...for Paxil

CR it's 25 mg - 62.5 mg. I think we went from 20mg to 25 mg when we

switched, but it was over 2 years ago, and I didn't write the dose

down in my journal at the time.

I TOTALLY agree that if a specific medication is not working on a

specific child, something should be changed. I remember, though,

the frustration of 'giving it enough time'. In the depths of the

OCD trenches, 6-8 weeks can seem like more than an eternity. And

then, one medication that works for someone might not work for

someone else....

I was just thinking, too, that Dr. Geller is an advisor to this

list. If we have specific questions about specific meds, we can

always ask him!
