Most of the appt, despite there being lots of other toys, bubbles and stuff, she dangled, spinned and played with her beads. Is this OCD or Autism? Or both? Well , I know kids with DS who have the OCD dx, but do not have autism. I understand the difference to be clear.......in autism you have to have all three areas affected (communication, repetitiveness/perseveration and social). A lot of what Maddie does would look like OCD, but it's clearly her autism, when you take into account all her behaviors. I have to tell you that like , no matter how many toys Maddie would be exposed to, she'd do the same thing as . Do I think she has OCD? NO, I think she has autism. If her social and communication skills were different, I'd be sure she had OCD if she dangled, stimmed and perseverated. Guest guest
I have often wondered if somne people don't consider OCD and PErseverative disorder to be the same thing. I DON'T. To me obsessive means can not be redirected (there is a compulsion) and perseverative means to persist or keep doing, but can be re-directed (not always easily. ) What do you guys think?? Words are just words until we make them have meaning!!! > > At our appt they felt she might also be OCD. This confused me. However the fact that she HAS to have the door open to precisely a certain angle. and the blinds as well, that she refuses to wear anything different or new, that she will only eat out of one particular dish etc....that to me seems like OCD. I don't know for sure. She doesn't have a specific dx of OCD but we've discussed it frequently with her neuro. Also in the book (again with the book!) Mental Wellness in Adults with DS...OCD like behaviors appear to be a strong component of " just " DS, not only Autism. And I've definitely seen them in DS kids who are not dxed with Autism. actually has to be physically forced to abandon a self imposed routine and yet appears to feel some relief when she is freed from that compulsion.
