Guest guest
<<I am the Mother of a 6 yr old daughter with Down Syndrome who also has recently been diagnosed with Autism. I would like to talk with other parents of similiar age child if possible. I do belong to a DS support group but need to find a better fit Hi, Everyone ....I just wanted to welcome you to the group. I am waaaayyyyy behind on messages but we can all relate to the " I do belong to a DS support group but need to find a better fit. " Many of us stopped going to our local support groups because our kids just 'didn't fit in' with all the 'normal' DS kids. My son is 19 y/o now and dx'd with autism when he was 5-6ish. You are fortunate in the fact that you can get the autism addressed early. Please make sure that it is your daughter's # 1 diagnosis now.....especially in school. That is where she will need the most help down the road. Don't let them tell you she can only have one dx for school and it will be DS. The DS is a walk in the park but the autism will require the school district to offer more services if she needs them....sensory, speech, OT, etc. As for dogs....please keep in mind the breed and how hyper they are around kids. Smaller dogs my be cuter but for the most part are far more hyper (biters) than larger dogs. Retrievers and labs need to be walked/exercised. Gareth has been around dogs all his life.....English springer spaniel, chow chow, and newfies. All were great dogs.....newfies being my favorite. Take care, Everyone.
