Hi guys, You could say I return from my weekend trip to responding to numerous private emails in regards to this topic of the GF/CF diet. I wish McCarthy reworded " Recovery " , yes this gives us all some HOPE and opens doors but in reality there needs to be some understanding that many when jumping into this know exactly what they are targeting. How could one change and embrace this diet as an opportunity for improved health rather than accept it as a punishment. ACCEPTANCE is the only answer I have found. It involves the Road Ahead, making a conscious decision to accept change is a good starting point. Living Gluten and dairy free is not a reprimand but a choice in our household to improve health when faced with the challenge of autism spectrum disorders, food allergies and intolerance. Seeing a pattern here with the family genes from the paternal and maternal with the Celiac Disease. Celiac disease runs in families. First degree relatives of individuals with celiac disease may or may not manifest symptoms of the disease. Now 's lab results have never shown positive or even with the full work test of what his GI doc had tested him for, all return normal. How I am recommending to the individuals I had email to privately " that I highly recommend to not self-diagnosis or self-medicate your individual without having to consult with medical professionals when even seeking the Alternative Bio-med route. Highly recommend EDUCATION is ESSENTIAL. RESEARCH and LEARN. For those of who have Celiac Disease, food allergies or intolerance, food is more than eating. FOOD is medicine. There is no " magic pill " to cure our disorder. Maintaining a diet free from problematic foods is the cure, and it can be accomplished with a little advance planning and perseverance. From my notes whom I met at the Autism One conference. Now this is just a wee bit I will share here. Sueson Louise Vess: http://www.specialeats.com/blog/ Special Eats, Gluten-Free & Dairy Free Cooking. IgG Food Intolerances- " Should I Rotate My Diet? " Suppose that every time you eat bananas, about an hour later you feel bad. Or last night's dinner causes stomach distress lingering until the following morning. Delayed food intolerance's are also known as IgG reactions. Many triggers form these reactions. Dysbiosis (a disturbance in the bacterial flora...resulting in gut dysfunction...) and yeast overgrowth may contribute to food intolerances; however an often-overlooked culprit is an immune shift. Our immune system should operate like a teeter-totter, shifting from TH1(virus and cancers)to TH2 (bacteria) and creating antibodies to infections and foreign invaders. If an individual suffers from leaky gut syndrome, food particles leak from the intestines into the body prompting the body to go into attack mode by developing antibodies. When the body increases antibody production, we may develop food intolerances. Lab testing may reveal which foods are problematic, but labs are not nearly as effective as keeping a food diary. Monitor your physical wellness after you ingest certain foods. If your healthcare practitioner is not working with you to repair your immune system then these food intolerances many not only become permanent, but more foods can join the list each passing month. The best way to avoid this dilemma is to rotate your food choices. A rotation diet means eating a particular food one out of every four days. Many gluten-intolerant also have a leaky gut. Their immune system is always in attack mode. If you eat and apple every day, the apple particles may leak from your intestine and you may develop antibodies against apple. If the intolerance is mild enough, you could follow a rotation diet and control the situation. Rotating foods gives the body a chance to eliminate antibodies. Rotation diets are also beneficial for those who may not have had official food allergy/intolerance testing but are prone to IgG food antibodies. Rotating all of your foods helps de-stress the body and it also allows the kidneys to clear antibodies from the blood. Anyone with celiac disease or gluten intolerance is faced with immune challenges. Very few traditional medical treatments balance or strengthen the immune system. We are each responsible for our good health care decisions and locating qualified practitioners to assist our digestive, immune and detoxification systems. http://www.allnaturaladvantage.com.au/autism_dietary_intervention_reco.htm http://www.cs.nsw.gov.au/rpa/Allergy/default.htm http://www.autism.com/triggers/index.htm Digested peptides: Are the result of nonspecific proteolysis as part of the digestive cycle. It has also been documented that, when certain food proteins such as gluten, casein, egg protein, and spinach protein are broken down, opioid peptides are formed. These peptides mimic the effects of morphine, and those individuals that are unable to break them down will experience mental illness. These peptides are quite short and are given names such as casomorphine, gluten exorphine, and dermorphine. Ultimately digested peptides are ribosomal peptides, although they aren't made on the ribosome of the organism that contains them. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peptide Highly recommend reading Children with Starving Brains, A Medical Treatment Guide for Autism Spectrum Disoder by Jaquelyn McCandless, MD. http://www.autism-rxguidebook.net/DesktopDefault.aspx?tabindex=0 & tabid=1 It is well known that a weakened immune system-whether through genetic predisposition or acquired as a result of intestinal problems-leaves children open to chronic infections. Gastrointestinal Pathology, Nutritional Deficiency as a Common Denominator. Here is a piece of what I will share, definitely have to check this out at your local library or glance at the book stores. A healthy digestive system is able to take complex foods and break them down to forms that the cells of the body can absorb and metabolize into energy. Many children with autism have trouble digesting casein or gluten. Casein is a milk protein, and gluten is a plant protein found in wheat and related grains. Proteins are made of building blocks called amino acids; short strings or chains of amino acids are called peptides. During digestion, many proteins are broken down into single amino acids; others are transported as slightly larger chains. When ingested proteins are only partially digested, what remains are longer chain peptides. Some autism researchers have published articles in the scientific literature about malabsorption, maldigestion, and the related finds or unusual proteins and peptides in the urine of people in autism. In many autistic children, those indigestible proteins and peptides come from casein and gluten; soy and corn can also be problematic. Many peptide chains are flushed out in the urine. However, because many autistic children have leaky guts, an acceptable amount of those substances can enter the bloodstream.
