We just found out about the ASD. His first therapy session is tomorrow.

Looking forward to it/dreading it at the same time. This diagnosis has

answered so many questions. The pre-therapy questionnaire was was an eye

opener. It was like someone had been looking in our windows because the

things that my son was doing were all mentioned on it! It was a relief to

finally understand why he wasn't developing like the other down's kids that

we knew.

{Disarmed} Welcome to Janet

Welcome Janet to our list. We are available 24/7 for support, comfort and

questions - someone is almost always on linee to respond. You are in great

company if I may say so! How old was your son when you learned of his dual

dx?

My son was 12 when I discovered this list at the time of his dx. What a

life saver for me. Elie is now 22 and finished FAPE this past MAy. Last

week he started to work in a sheltered environment with a day services

component. HE is so happy with his new place in life (a working man!) and

loves to go each day. HE was very sad when school ended for him..

That is how many of us have felt. Why is our child not like all those other

kids. Some of us used to be on the DS list group but left since our kids

are not like those kids. The things that those parents are concerned about

don't begin to be the areas we worry about and work towards.

Isn't it nice to know you are not alone???

You might enjoy reading some of the back files too.

Janet, I kept telling the Dr.'s since my son was 3 that I though

something was wrong. It was not until my son broke his nose in 2001

that the Dr. asked what could they do to help.I said diagnoisis him

with autism,so they did.But the true diagnoisis from an autism

center did not come until about 2yrs ago when was 10.This

center knew within 5 minutes he was a typical autistic child.Of

course I observed like you kids with Ds through our local DS group

and non of their kiddos acted like . did

stemming, rocking, self abbusive behaviors, and was non-verbal.Before

the diagnoisis the Dr's tried to tell me lots of kids with DS act

like my son.I told the Dr.'s I only know one child and this kid is

autistic on top of being DS.Guess what mom was right. There are many

articles you can read on why it is hard to get the dual DG.Let me

know I can give you the info if you want to read it. This extra Dx

will help get other help available. Not like it will be tons more but

at least it will be more than you are getting now.Plus the peace of

mind that you finally have a handle on why he is not developing like

other kids with just DS. Congratulations. Cyndi B
