Guest guest
I am watching it now and I have to admit I am getting very emotional. Holly OPRAH Oprah is having a segment on our friend AUTISM today! " Trust your hunches. They're usually based on facts filed away just below the conscious level. Guest guest
So what did you all think? I was not expecting much from McCarthy as I'm sure you guessed:-) but I was pretty impressed with the show. I'm sure Oprah's gonna take a big hit from the vaccine folks but I thought they kept that part fairly openminded. I think maybe Ms. McCarthy was forced to grow up a bit and I was actually impressed by her enthusiasm (even tho she has a zillion dollars and we all worked just as hard as she did and didn't have the same results). I'm interested in this: Were any of you actually influenced for the first time by this show to give the gfcf diet a try? I do admit to a certain prejudice here as I was happy to hear it suggested by both JM and Holly R. Peete as one of the first and easiest or least invasive things to try. For anyone who didn't see it there's supposed to be an online chat at Oprah's website tonight with both of them. Sherry

Unfortunately, Tori doesn't have a gf/cf intolerance...so here we are. For those who it works for...God Bless. >> Oh I definitely agree......I just wondered if it inspired anyone who hasn't yet tried it to do so. I didn't mean to imply that that was the ONLY thing they did for their kids. And they certainly didn't imply the diet " made it go away " ....just a first step.Certainly sounds like they did alot....but when you've got that early a diagnosis and that kind of money and that kind of luck and that kind of lack of complication with something like DS I think it's like apples and oranges. I guess I was just surprised that I didn't actually feel as negatively towards M as I had planned to. LOL. So you and a already tried gfcf with your kids and no improvement at all? That sucks. We really didn't either from straight gfcf...more from eliminating stuff like apples and corn that she was extremely allergic to. I don't know. I just don't think the same rules apply with our kids and " regular " kids with Autism. Just my opinion. My girlfriend called me up during the show and asked " why can't they talk about kids who have other dxes like DS too? and I'm thinking....yeah, wouldn't we all like to know that. Guest guest
It was okay, but I felt just as alone watching that as I do sometimes watching kids with only DS. I think DS-Autism is way different than just autism or just DS. Beth Re: OPRAH So what did you all think? The only thing I didn't like came from Holly, when she said something about these kids being labeled retarded wrongly. That's a misconception. I believe the stats are that 75 percent of individuals dx'd with autism DO have MR. Other than that, I thought it was honest and I am grateful to see some celebs out there talking about it. I know Sylvester Stallone has a son with autism, and not much was ever said about it. I wonder how many more are out there, that don't put it in the limelight. Guest guest
Beth, I totally agree with you- we're still an elite group. I think the program was too general anyway, not discussing in any detail what the treatments are or where families should go for resources. - To: @...: bdehoff@...: Wed, 19 Sep 2007 00:20:24 -0400Subject: Re: OPRAH It was okay, but I felt just as alone watching that as I do sometimes watching kids with only DS. Beth----- Original >> Well, I hate to be so wishy washy but after thinking about it some more I have to concede that the only thing that REALLY impressed me was that McCarthy was not the complete ditz I had expectations of her being. You guys are absolutely right.... " our " kind of autism doesn't even fit into the regular autism slot. I think eventually science and genetics will prove this out but for now we are left with the " A " word applied to our kids as well.. This makes me realize how totally prejudiced I was against M (I still don't consider myself a fan by any means) but I'm relieved she may not do quite as much damage to the autism community as I had anticipated. Just me being overly prejudiced ahead of time. Sherry
Guest guest
nathan doesn't either, hes been tested several times and no gluten or casein allergy or reactions ever found.shawna ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com
Guest guest
What kinds of testing did you do for gluten sensitivity? Hardly anyone who has done the gfcf diet has a child who tests allergic or sensitive to gluten. I'm not pushing the diet...please believe me....just the info that traditional allergy testing is inconclusive and even the more expensive and involved OAT and peptide tests are not all that reliable. The only true test is a trial of the diet. Even M is talking about how her son did not test positive. I think it's one of the reasons it's so hard to make the decision to do the diet because there's no clear cut diagnosis...like celiac for instance....that can give us the energy and assurance to try one more difficult thing. Just my understanding. Please don't yell at me:-) Sherry
Guest guest
I just saw " Autism: The Musical " (a great documentary, by the way) and Stills' son has Aspbergers.
