Guest guest
Have you been able to get someone to observe and do a functional assessment of Janie to create a behavior management plaan? One of the great things we got from Elwyn where Elie attended their dayschool for 6 years, was the behavior component. When he started there at 15, I wasn't sure we could take much more. The aggression, defiance, meltdowns, walk-aways, sadness was so bad, that I took him to a sleepaway camp that summer, didn't look it over, left my phone number, and went home, not even sure if I could stand to go get him!!! . But with a behavior plan with positive consequences and EVERYONE reacting the same way, we have our boy back. Of course, he is now 22 and we are again thinking about out of our house in the next couple of years, but options are better now. HE doesn't need to be in a RTF or confined, because there is virtually no aggression, he has meltdowns, but they are stay in place - not aggressive, not running away, he just freezes. http://club.live.com/home.aspx?icid=CLUB_wlmailtextlink
Guest guest
The school is starting a functional behavior assessment now. Also, the agency we get Janie's personal care provider from sent us a behavior specialist today! This guy " Doc " gave us suggestions for different ways to respond to Janie so we tried some out tonight - example: when she spits out her beverage tell her it looks like fun and take her outside for a spitting contest... It was a hoot watching the 50-yr-old caregiver out there spitting and Janie drinking her water and refusing to spit! We have forms to keep track of the dynamics of her behaviors and try to figure out what she is trying to get when she hurts people and how to turn it around. He will be back in a couple weeks. I am hopeful that we will see some positive results. Also DDD is trying to find someone to come here to try to figure her out, but I am wondering if Doc is being paid by them. The mental health clinic is trying to get us wrap-around services and Catholic Community Services is providing all kinds of supports. It seems at the moment that maybe there is a chance to overcome the aggression. All kids should come with instruction manuals - especially high needs kids! Hope is a wonderful thing. P.
