Hi Cyndi,

I potty trained Zeb over the summer when he was three. I can't remember doing

anything special. I put him in underpants and did nothing else. I was not much

different from the older kids. It took more time and Zeb was older. The drop and

flop just sort of fazed out over time. I left him home alot during those days

rather than fight with him.

when he passed. Zeb was 5. I felt the same as you do, no more

animals, besides being heartbroken. Zeb has asked for a dog for

years. Mom said no but maybe when you can take care of a dog

yourself I may consider. Our dear business associates with dogs felt

that Zeb should have a dog. Zeb loves their dogs. They stay in my

yard with their trailers every year for a week after driving up from

Fl. They picked me up at the airport in Fl when I flew in to drive

my in-laws back home from their winter home. They bought Zeb this

puppy. I drove home 1200 miles with gram, gramps and the puppy. The

puppy was the most well behaved of the bunch. I would not have

purchased a dog! Zeb named him Lucky and was thrilled for a day.

Lucky is always an inch from my feet. Zeb occassionally takes him

out. He is the cutiest little dog with a big attitude. DH says he's

just like me, ok, I now have a dog. Yes, Zeb used to stop, drop and

> flop or refuse to get in or out of the car. It stopped about age

10 but I can't remember exactly. I also remember pushing the cart to

the van door and trying to lift that little fat body. He often fell

asleep in the car and peed on the seat. He was completely trained at

3 except when he slept even for 5 min. It stopped abruptly last

year. I don't know why but who cares. He is actually becoming a nice

kid but lazy.

but he is usually easy to redirect, much mellower.shawna

Charlyne, had a therapist let him fall a break his leg right

before he turned 2.He would not crawl, walk, etc until he was 6 yr

old. We had to get a wheelchair for for preschool. So I could

not even work on potty training him then.I was trying prior to this

accident that was on purpose. The therapist words and I quote, " I

stood him up to a chair to teach him the consequences of

falling " .Well he broken his tibea in his leg.I do not know if I

spelled that right. at 2 was like taking an infant and trying to

stand and infant up at a chair. He was to wobbly and she should have

known better. She was the expert. will go on the potty sometimes

when I take him but only1 or 2 has he intiated going. When I try to

take him he stops, drops, and flops. My back is breaking as he is 12

yrs old and 90 lbs. I should have had more help early on from his

dad on trying to get him potty trained.Cyndi B

Hi Cyndi,

Yikes, a therapist let him fall. I can't say what I would have done but it

wouldn't have been pretty. Do you have toileting goals on his IEP? It may take

time but better late than never. I trained Zeb to sit on the toilet, standing

came much later. I do remember swooping him on the toilet when I watched him

begin to swat. He peed during the night until he was 13. I did everything but

nothing worked. He would go fine before bed and 5 min after he fell asleep he

was wet. It abruptly stopped, I couldn't tell you exactly why. I do remember a

urologist telling me that some kids have immature bladders and he would stop

eventually and he was right.

> Charlyne,Oh yes potty trainig is in his IEP Goal's and they do

take him at school.I just got approved for a program in my area to

help with autism and I am hoping this will help him.The program is

called impact plus. You have to jump loop holes to get it.The child

has to be autistic but not so severe that they cannot make

improvement within 6 months. So if your child is really bad and you

need help you have to lie.He got approved for it before but they did

not have any workers to work with after school. So we had to

reapply. What a joke. Cyndi B

Zeb to sit on the toilet, standing came much later. I do remember

swooping him on the toilet when I watched him begin to swat. He peed

during the night until he was 13. I did everything but nothing

worked. He would go fine before bed and 5 min after he fell asleep

he was wet. It abruptly stopped, I couldn't tell you exactly why. I

do remember a urologist telling me that some kids have immature

bladders and he would stop eventually and he was right.

Jake is now peeing on the potty pretty consistently, but the pooping is taking

longer. I started him straddling the potty because he was so small and for a

long time he did not like the little potty seat things. Now, he stands to pee

most times and even sits on the potty with his books. He has only pooped on his

own 1 time but that was not too long ago.

B, Did this therapist not know that most kids with DS do not even begin

to walk until they are 2? I would have been crazed! Jake was in a halo for 5

weeks when he was 18 months. (spinal fusion, not an accident). It was so hard

so I can imagine your pain!

Just to let you all know that I finally took the initiative to get Jake's

diapers covered through our medical assistance program here in PA. I also

talked to the doctor about a handicapped placard and he said " YES, YOU TOTALLY

QUALIFY! " I was so excited. I am working on that now! everyone should check on

that. As my doctor said, he is a danger in the parking lot, you cannot keep

lifting him when he stops and drops and you need more space tring to get him in

and out of the car. I will be so happy to park up front and not have to worry

with the entire parking lot!

Hi Cyndi,

Yikes, a therapist let him fall. I can't say what I would have done but it

wouldn't have been pretty. Do you have toileting goals on his IEP? It may take

Holly: We have had a Handicap Placard for 2 years already for Tori. The

stop/drop/flops are very dangerous, and no we cannot carry our little ones any

longer, because they are no longer little.

Any news on Jake's bloods yet?

Holly, I am more careful with Therapist these days.I scrutinize all

the therapist now.I thought she was the professional and I did not

know until afterwards she had never worked with kids. has

actually pooped on the potty several times but I have to lead him to

the potty chair. What causes spinal fusion? Cyndi B

>

> Jake is now peeing on the potty pretty consistently, but the

pooping is taking longer. I started him straddling the potty because

he was so small and for a long time he did not like the little potty

seat things. Now, he stands to pee most times and even sits on the

potty with his books. He has only pooped on his own 1 time but that

was not too long ago.

>

> B, Did this therapist not know that most kids with DS do

not even begin to walk until they are 2? I would have been

crazed! Jake was in a halo for 5 weeks when he was 18 months.

(spinal fusion, not an accident). It was so hard so I can imagine

your pain!

>

> Just to let you all know that I finally took the initiative to get

Jake's diapers covered through our medical assistance program here

in PA. I also talked to the doctor about a handicapped placard and

he said " YES, YOU TOTALLY QUALIFY! " I was so excited. I am working

on that now! everyone should check on that. As my doctor said, he

is a danger in the parking lot, you cannot keep lifting him when he

stops and drops and you need more space tring to get him in and out

of the car. I will be so happy to park up front and not have to

worry with the entire parking lot!

> Yikes, a therapist let him fall. I can't say what I would have

done but it wouldn't have been pretty. Do you have toileting goals

on his IEP? It may take time but better late than never. I trained
