Guest guest
Thanks and everybody else for the diaper tips. Mikey will be 8 in June and sits on the toilet (only if I put him there), but prefers to twirl toilet paper than actually " go " . He still fits into luvs size 6, but it looks like I will be switching to pampers soon. Patty ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com. She still has accidents, probably a couple times a week, but she IS in underpants. She will sometimes squat right on the floor for number 2 to get better leverage, so that is an issue we have to work on. We have to find a way to help her get appropriate leverage while on the toilet. AT night, she wears small size depends. I just read this and I could not believe this. This is not about what is easier for them, it is also babying her by making her lay down to have her underwear changed. By going to pullups she may become a little more independent and can learn to help with her toileting and dressing issues. So they have to remove her pants and shoes, it doesn't take all that long, I know I've been doing it for many, many years now. Do not let them hold your child back just to make it easier on them. Trisha's OT and PT both suggested putting a foot stool under Trisha's legs to help with leverage as she has the same problem. They also said to see if she would lean forward as it helps the pushing action from the pressure on the stomach as she learns forward. Guest guest
Jake just turned 8 last month. He is mostly #1 trained. We stick to a schedule and have done that for about 1 1/2. School schedules him also. He pees every time you give him the chance. Pooping we are still working on. This year we have had more success and every month he seems to poop on the potty more. He has had only 2 accidents at school this year. He wears underwear to school but pull ups at night. He has just started initiating potty peeing on his own. this is new these past few weeks. We still put him in diapers if we are traveling or going to be in places that may not have the cleanest nicest bathrooms. He usually holds it though until we can get him to a bathroom. Guest guest
I haven't been part of this listserv for years, and have just recently rejoined, so pardon me if these suggestions have already been made. Have you ever tried using a foot stool to give your child the leverage they need to have a BM? Not knowing how tall your child is, I am not sure if this would help or not, but the best advice I was ever given was to use a foot stool so that the child has something to support them to give them the ability to bear down. I never realized that the combination of low muscle tone and feet dangling above the floor compromises the ability to go. I was also taught to have my child bend forward and touch his toes. This gives more leverage and helps overcome the low muscle tone. As far as potty training, have you ever tried a visual toilet training program? We used Little Friends visual program which was designed for kids on the spectrum. I partnered with the school, and together we were able to quickly toilet train my son at the age of 7 1/2. The school resisted at first saying toilet training wasn't their job. But I convinced them it was in their best interest, since my son would flush his socks and have significant bathroom behaviors while staff was trying to take off shoes and pants to change pull ups. I advocated and had them add a goal to his IEP to work on toileting skills. I asked them to take the mirror out of the bathroom and put a toilet seat lid on the classroom toilet. It wasn't easy to convince them to do this, but later the teacher told me it was the best thing she had ever done. It not only helped my child, but all the kids in the class. My son will be 13 in three weeks. He is 5 feet tall and still using his footstool for BM's. He still requires Miralax everyday to help with his stool withholding syndrome. Since we started using the footstool and having BM's in the toilet instead of on the floor, few and far between are the feces smearing episodes. Here is the link to Little Friends Toileting program: http://www.littlefriendsinc.org/Shop.asp?p=2 & prodID=14 & catID=7 <http://www.littlefriendsinc.org/Shop.asp?p=2 & prodID=14 & catID=7> Hope this helps someone! > > > In a message dated 5/18/2007 8:29:34 A.M.
