Many thanks to all

answering me J

Yes I was so frustrated

when the mom asked me for a ¡°guarantee¡±: I always explain all the other reason

why it can be a good idea to cut a tongue tie, for the future too.

I understand too what you

tell about SNS. Anyway which other tool can be used in these cases? I learnt

some years ago, that for several experts SNS as finger feeding are at least

better than cups or spoons in order to re-establish a good sucking . This mom

still tried with spoon but was exhausted L, so probably the best

now would be FF?

nipple pain, maybe tongue-tie

Hello, a.

It is so frustrating when mothers

insist that we give them a guarantee of effectiveness! We can't ever

guarantee *anything* about breastfeeding. Sometimes you just have to

take a leap of faith and try something.

As said, yes a baby with

a tongue-tie can cause pain and trauma on only one side. It seems

illogical and it not usually how it works, but it *can* happen that way.

Baby can also cause more trauma

on one side than the other if he has a stiff neck and prefers to hold his

head to one side rather than straight ahead or to the other side. Can

also happen if baby's jaw opens unevenly. As said, craniosacral

therapy can help in these cases.

Also, be careful about using an

SNS. These tube feeders reward *any* suck, even a suck that is

incorrect for breastfeeding. So, baby keeps using his improper suck and

keeps filling up his tummy, so he learns that improper suck really, really

well, but is doing nothing to stimulate mother's milk supply and may even

continue to cause her intense pain.

Years ago, a mother in another

city called me. She had been using an SNS for 3 weeks, on the advice of

someone up where she lived. Mother was pumping and had all the milk her

baby needed. She only put pumped breastmilk in the SNS, never

formula. Yet, she was doing pre- and post-feed weights on a very

accurate scale and could see that the amount of milk that baby got during the

feeding was exactly the amount the mother had put in the SNS. Even

though she pumped *after* feedings, so the breasts were full of milk while

baby was at breast with the SNS, the SNS had reinforced his improper suck and

he wasn't getting a drop of milk from the breast while he was there. He

only got what was in the SNS.

I never recommend the use of an

SNS or other tube-at-breast supplementer unless the baby has the proper

suck and the mother has a low milk supply due only to some factor in herself

(poor management, PCOS, anemia, surgery, etc). Otherwise, the SNS only

seems to compound the problems.

Thanks

for your reply!

Unfortunately

I have no many experts here in Rome

L, but I will look for.

The problem

here is that the mom is really upset and would like to know if a frenuloctomy

is ¡°sure¡± it will solve her problem to decide to do it.

Phheewwww!!
