Hi Laurie,

Mic has autism, dah, the maladaptive behavior is part of his disability. I

wouldn't get upset over this. What I would be asking the school staff was what

are they going to do about it. How are they going to teach Mic in spite of the

behaviors. Isn't Mic in a private school for students with autism? If he didn't

have this disability he would be attending his neighborhood school, right. They

are not reporting anything that you didn't already know. Truthfully, seeing it

in black and white is hard for all of us.

Laurie-

You're right. It does hurt. Treat yourself kindly today. And put on your

armor tomorrow and get ready to do battle for Mic. No one can fight for him

like you do!

Hello,

I am a teacher in a special school in uk. Have a asd/ds kid in class, and joined

this group to learn more. I am writing reports for my kids now, and your post

was a reminder of what is important. I work closely with families. We all know

what the problems are. reports should celebrate achievement in the year, talk

about the amazing things kids can do. I think i remember smiling over your

tooth brush story. These are the important things. Mic might have problems, but

has so many skills too. Made me think twice about the way i teach some sef help

skills. I can't imagine how hard it must have been. I will do my best to

celebratethe achievement of my kids their reports. thanks for the reminder.

Emma,

Welcome to the list - what a breath of fresh air (from the teaching world) you

are! I think if most teachers DID stop to think for just a bit before they

churned out the report cards and progress reports and thought about a little

celebration to go along with the usual " bad " news - it would be an easier pill

for parents to swallow.

Thank you!

Hi Laurie,

I hate to get into semantics but do not let the school use non-compliance.

Research has proven that students that are taught compliance are at risk in

adult life for abuse. Besides, what typical child do you know that is totally

compliant? Does Mic have a sensory diet built into his IEP? Does the BIP include

positive behavioral supports with frequent rewards throughout the day? Are the

rewards often enough for Mic to benefit? What type of tasks are they expecting

Mic to do in a 1-1 setting? If he is just beginning to show interest in his

peers why would they isolate him? Just a few thoughts?

Well almost the same crap maladaptive behaviors are getting in the way and

non-compliance. BUT he is doing much better playing with his peers and is seemly

beginning to show interest in the other children. They have implemented a new

behavior plan to see if they can get him to stay on task for longer periods of

time and it seems everything going on around him disrupts his attention so they

are changing some of his group activities to one on one in a separate room. They

think Mic has the ability to dress himself but wont I dont think he does. He can

strip his clothes off but getting them back on is a different story. He is

helping me more dressing but he doesn't seem to have the motor skills to get his

pants and shirt on. He can pull his pants up once I help him get his feet in

them and pull his shirt on once I lead his arm in the hole.He gets both legs in

on side of his pants and cant get his feet thru. So he's doing little better.

Everything is so slow going with him. Hes do

for a spurt and sometimes in summer program he does bettter.Im not sitting here

crying like I was last time.I can see improvement they dont.Hes eating alot more

at school and no more at home but he has begun to drink soda from a bottle not

that soda is what I think he should be drinking but at least its something.I was

thinking of switching to juice and putting it it a soda bottle but his dad

doesnt think its time to do that yet.I talked to some other parents that kids

eat better at school then at home.Mics ped says not time to remove pediasure

from him because is where hes getting his nutritician from. Getting to these.
