My son will be 5 end of month.. not walking.... he babbles.. but not really

talks.

My middle one is 8 almost 9 and he still doesn't talk... but think it related to

the autism...

My oldest is 13.. never shuts up!!!

Hey guys,

I know there are several of you on here that had kids that didn't walk until

really late. I have a woman in our local Ds support group whose son just turned

4 and is not walking or talking.

Just curious if anyone has any tips to share....

Thanks,

Jayne

Hmm. Katy was a late walker, and she started at 2 1/2, so I would think this

lady really needs to get help. I babysat a girl who was three and not walking,

talking, or eating anything but liquids, but her mom had not paid her much

attention in life, and she'd never had any sort of therapy. she also had never

been around other children, and once she started spending her days with me she

started progressing quickly. is the lady getting help?

Hugs,

Jayne: Miss Tori didn't walk until she was just short of 4. Her peers in her

typical classroom got her to do it. I actually had a " handicap " walker for her

and sent in it. Everyday the kids would tell her... " Ok, Tori-time to use those

walking feet. "

Autism. SHe walked at 19 months, started to that is. Does this child

Jayne,

My son did not walk until age 5. He was very ill the first 2 years of life

(heart surgeries, trach and vent, RSV 2x, and oxygen use). But it seemed to

take forever for him to walk, and he had therapy all his life. Some kids DO

take longer. It would be important to have an evaluation done at this stage so

some therapy could be given is none is happening yet. Is the child in

preschool? The teacher or school district could be asked to provide an

evaluation.

Is he standings or pulling to stand? We found that a weighted cart with a

handle helped Elie thru this stage. We were told NOT to use a walker both

because of hip displacement and because it encourages sloth. We got a low

wheeled wooden cart and loaded it with blocks to make it non-tippy. He

loved it. we also put toys of interesst far away so he had to go get them.

and high enough that he had to stand to get them.

Sara,

I remember this when was younger, had an excellent PT who

helped us using this method, started walking around a little over 2

y/o. What memories.

My son, , is 3 years and 8 months old and is still not walking

independently either (or talking), but gets around in his walker just fine.

We just saw Dr. Capone at Kennedy Krieger a few weeks ago, and he said that it

is not that unusual for some children with DS to be very late walkers. If they

are dually diagnosed, the additional challenges often further delay gross motor

development, especially in the area of motor planning. But even a minority of

children with DS alone sometimes have very low muscle tone, thus further

delaying this progression. We also saw Pat Winders, PT at Kennedy Krieger, and

she had told us the same thing last summer. The key is as long as as there is

no regression in the gross motor area-this could be a warning of something

physically wrong (ie: with the spine). was evaluated by an orthopedist,

neurosurgeon ,( a spot on his spine had his neuro ped. think of a tethered

spinal cord) and MRIs of the entire spine/ neck were done just to be sure, and

everything mechanically is fine. However, it is definitely difficult at times to

wait for progress to happen, esp. as our kiddos get heavier!!

I would definitely recommend to the family to have their child evaluated esp. by

an orthopedist, if they haven't already done so ( orthotics have definitely

helped too) and wish them all the best!

Regards,

Mom to , 3 yrs. old
