Actually, the stroller I bought about a yr and a 1/2 ago, does come in a larger

mobility version for kids with special needs. I just found their site and am

thrilled. We started with the Dreamer Design Red Manhattan Lite...but now it's

time to move onto a larger version.

Here is the link if anyone else is interested.

Holly, MontyMan has a wheelchair. It is a real nice, easy to fold

one.....very light weight. With my lower back and my old age, I need something

light

and easy to handle. Monty is around 200 pounds now, so I also need something

that is strong enough.

We also use the MacClaren. Logan is almost 9 and 73lbs. It is rated up to

140 lbs, I think.

Can you all tell me what types of strollers you have used with your children

who are 8+ in years. The umbrella stollers don't work anymore and I nee

something that is heavy duty enough to handle Jake (54 lbs) and not sit him

so close to the ground. I know many of you have MacClaren strollers. Any

others and which specific ones have worked well for you?

Thanks

Holly: We finally got approved for a stroller for Tori, and I was very specific

in which one I needed. Tori weighs 53 lbs. and outgrew the Dreamer

DesignManhattan lite we bought 2.5 year ago. We got the Design Dreamer Axiom II

Mobility stroller. It holds up to 150 lbs. Here is the link

http://www.dreamerdesign.net/index.cfm

We had Tori's PT apply for it. Due to my age, arthritis and Tori's lack of

safety awareness it was a major concern. Also, she doesn't walk more than 100'.

We started last April and it took 2 denials from our personal ins. and 1 from

ACCESS, but we finally got it 2 weeks ago and I love it!

Tori's Dr. wrote the perscription, then the P/T took it by the horns and ran

with it.

has a Convaid wheelchair, Scout style. It's like a jazzy

stroller/wheelchair, and it gets you in the wheelchair seating areas. We had the

same issue. turned 8 in December and we got the wheelchair a few weeks

after. It's great. It's very pricey, though; fortunately, his new Medicaid

waiver covered it.

Ah, a sore point at the moment. Charlie needs a new stroller. Have tried

a couple of times to get our health insurance to cover this. They have

denied twice. They say they would pay for a wheelchair but not a

stroller. Funny, they paid for his current, old, worn out,

bus-transportable stroller.

I've got an application in asking NJ's DDD to fund it. What I want is

Convaid Cruiser Transport CX14T**. Could see one here,

http://www.adaptivemall.com/preadbascrui1.html

I hope. And hope to get one of these someday before too long. -- Bob

You should be able to get it covered through insurance if your Dr. writes a

script for a " push-chair " and says something like " needed for due to

low-tone and low stamina " . Sometimes the word stroller seems like

something that someone could buy at Walmart - they need to see the need. If

your child can walk and is a flight risk, I would let them know that, as

well.

I had a Baby Jogger, ll, special needs with a leg well which I had for about

5 years. I then passed it on to another member of this list when Elie

outgrew it. Honestly, I probably should have just bought a w/c. I didn't

cause I wanted him to lok more " normal " (yes, I was in to that at one time,

looong sigh.) but how many 8 yo are in a wheeled anything??? We finally did

buy a w/c at a FLEA MARKET!! Then my husband put heavy duty (lawn mower )

wheels on the front. Little did I know how easy and realtively cheap w/c of

all sizes and type are available. Check out freecycle or Craig's List. We

use the w/c for crowds now.

Me, too. Hung on to the stroller idea for too long. We got 's wheelchair in

Dec. and wish we had sooner. For one, it fits him and he's comfy. We just use it

for situations that have a lot of walking. It was perfect on his wish trip to

Disney. Also great for traipsing around the hospital. As a side benefit, people

are really kind, as a rule, to the kid in the wheelchair. Far fewer " what is

wrong with that kid " stares and more people just holding a door, saying hello,

smiling. It's kind of strange, but hey, I'll take it.

We still have the MacClaren Major for Logan, but have used it all of 2 times

since we got his service dog. However, we are going to Disney in March and

plan on bringing it for the park as Logan. We used to favor the stroller

type because Logan is a flight risk, but now that we have the dog, a w/c may

make more sense. My only concern would be times we use the stroller (ie

Disney) that we would want him " strapped down " , for lack of a better term.

Do you all find that you have to struggle with the escape artist when you

have the kids in the chairs? We won't be bringing the dog into the park if

it is too hot as the black top could burn the pads of her paws.

's wheelchair has a 5-point harness that straps him in. It's an accessory

available for most chairs you order.

There are some wonderful " booties " to protect dog paws.

W/c: When we first got it, we put and abdominal strap around Elie and the

chair. That was enough. Within 2 uses, he grew to love his chair. We did

use it at Disney. The only problem is that we went in the w/c line which

sometimes took LONGER than the other lines as some rides only allow so many

handicapped people (their words) onto a ride - because if the ride gets

stuck they have to be able to hand carry, lead, stretcher out people who

cannot walk.
