Guest guest
I'm sorry if this repeats what others have said. I just don't have time to read the responses - sorry. Everything you have said suggest your son is dehydrated. We have a dear friend who also went through this with her son. He was 5/DS and still on a bottle. She was referred to a Speech Therapist because as it turns out her son couldn't drink from a sippy cup or straw. At the time we all thought yes it's time and he will do it when he gets thirsty enough. We didn't realize how many muscles it takes to drink from a cup, straw or sippy cup. We didn't realize what it takes for some of our kids to swallow the amount of liquid produced from a sippy cup, straw or cup. It takes a great deal of motor planning to learn to drink from anything other than the breast or bottle. Suckling is a natural reflex. It might also be a sensory issue in the amount of liquid - stream versus the amount from a sippy cup, cup or straw. I would ask for a referral to a ST before you switch over from the bottle. There are STs who specialize in feeding disorders. Good luck!! nna Mommy to Freddie 5yrs Full Inclusion Kindy Started T-Ball!! Mild to moderate dehydration is likely to cause: Dry, sticky mouth Sleepiness or tiredness — children are likely to be less active than usual Thirst Decreased urine output — fewer than six wet diapers a day for infants and eight hours or more without urination for older children and teens Few or no tears when crying Muscle weakness Headache Dizziness or lightheadedness Severe dehydration, a medical emergency, can cause: Extreme thirst Extreme fussiness or sleepiness in infants and children; irritability and confusion in adults Very dry mouth, skin and mucous membranes Lack of sweating Little or no urination — any urine that is produced will be dark yellow or amber Sunken eyes Shriveled and dry skin that lacks elasticity and doesn't " bounce back " when pinched into a fold In infants, sunken fontanels — the soft spots on the top of a baby's head Low blood pressure Rapid heartbeat Fever In the most serious cases, delirium or unconsciousness --- Jessi wrote: > Hey guys, it has been a while since I have been on > here. > I do a have concern about Danial...... > I have taken him off the bottle and am trying to get > him to do the > sippy cup.
