Guest guest
--- Yikes !!! The poor kid lives on ice-cream, milk and cheese. I guess in her case she craves it. I better consult a dietition or a nutritionist, she'll need to take supplements. Any substitute suggestions in the mean time? Thanks for your help ! Guest guest
She may be getting high on the opiate effect of the casein, and that's why she craves it...to maintain that level of being drunk on it. Casein converts to an opiate during digestion, and if she's missing an enzyme to break that peptide down into its individual amino acids, she's got opiate-like substances running loose to her brain. Yes, if you pull her off casein, you'll need a cal-mag supplement. Low calcium causes head pain. Some kids poke at their eyes, some bang their heads etc. You could try digestive enzymes instead of removing dairy, but you'll get a clearer picture of whats happening if you can manage to remove dairy for a while, add it back in, and then see if you can do enzymes as a 3rd step. Look for something w/ DPPIV in it. > > --- > Yikes !!! The poor kid lives on ice-cream, milk and cheese. I guess > in her case she craves it. Guest guest
--- If shes LI, then how do I know if its the casein as well?? I am trying to stop all dairy, its only day 2 but its not easy, she HATES the soy milk. If I gave her the enzymes then she could continue with dairy? And would it have to Lactose free as well ? Sorry for all these questions, I'm just getting a little mixed up here. I just don't understand how they can say shes LI yet she never complained, except for having gas, but she wasn't the one complaining about that, lol ! Guest guest
Lactose usually only affects digestion, it's the casein that affects digestion and behavior. If you take her off all dairy and her behavior improves (remember it can take at least 2 weeks for it to all leave her system) then you will know if she has a problem with casein. I would say the majority of kids I have worked with can not tolerate casein, or gluten. My own son, who is neurotypical, is severely allergic to casein, and we are doing an elimination to test soy and gluten as well. The structure of all 3 is very similar, so if she can't have one, she may not be able to have any. Try vanilla rice milk, it has a much milder taste than soy. You can buy the calcium fortified one. Pacific Rice is gluten free as well, but not many others are. Enzymes may help for accidental dairy ingestion, but not for intentional eating. HTH, and I have lots of other info on the diet if you want. I also own a food allergie group that has a number of parents of autistic kids on the GFCF diet. http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/foodallergiesinkids/ Amnesty > > > > > > --- > > > Yikes !!! Guest guest
Amnesty has given you some great advice. Try the rice milk. You need to do whatever it takes to get her COMPLETELY off dairy for a couple of weeks, and then experiment with enzymes later. You'll never know how dairy affects her unless you do this. Beg, bargain, bribe her. *grin* Agree to give up something, too, and let her " police " you as part of the deal. Whatever it takes. Some children are able to do dairy with the enzymes, but some are not. It's very individual, as some kids are just more sensitive than others. Join the " Enzymesandautism " yahoo list for more information. They have a good files section as well. > > --- > If shes LI, then how do I know if its the casein as well??
