Hi ,

When my was born almost 28 years ago, the doctor's told me that a very high percentage of boys born having Down Syndrome are sterile. (he actually told me 99.1 percent!) I went to a website called WebMD and under the section titled, "Adults with Down Syndrome" this is an actual quote: "Men with Down syndrome most often are sterile and cannot father children." I went on to type in "what percentage of men with Down Syndrome are sterile?" Up popped: 'Down Syndrome: Frequently asked questions'-by Len Leshin, MD, FAAP and he says, "Men with DS have traditionally been considered sterile; however, there have been two documented cases of adult men with DS fathering children." Of course there's no way to know if your daughter's boyfriend is sterile, unless he is tested. Let's hope he is sterile, for your daughter's health sake! One thing I do know, is that we keep our 17 year old daughter, , close to us, as we don't ever want her taken advantage of by anybody! I've already had doctor's try to get me to make her go on birthcontrol of some type and I told them NO! She's with us all the time and she doesn't date and even if she did date, we will be sure to supervise her well. We are strong believer's in getting married before sex, although, I realize many do not hold that view. I hope by now you have some answers that you have been looking for!

I'm coming in very late on this, but I want to know what the state is saying. Is it that PA will not pay for an operation, or that the state is acting as guardian for the girl, and neither she nor her parents have any say in this? If it is the latter reason, I think there are plenty of pro-bono law groups who would be interested in taking it on. From what you say, the girl's health is at risk if she becomes pregnant.

Sterilization

My daughter is 22 with a lot of health issues. She is in a relationship for 2 years now to a great guy who also has down syndrome. If she was to get pregnant it would be a tubel pregnancy and she wouldn't make it. She is also on a blood thinner for a mitral valve replacement. The state of Pa is telling me she can't have this surgery done. I now have to get a lawyer and fight the state on this. Does anyone have any experience or advise that would help me.Mom to elisha 22 ds. Karissa 20 Kelsey 17 and Mason 3
