So my ds (13) has had a really bad 3 weeks.  Major meltdowns (one so bad we

called the police on advice of his therapist) obsessive thoughts and lots of

depressive symptoms - sleeping excessively, withdrawn, age regression big time,

and uninterested in anything.  In the last week even his " look " has changed,

and he looks unhealthy.  The last time we saw this look was when he was

hospitalized.

Anyway, I asked if he was feeling ok lately physically, and he complained of

feeling tired all time and like he didn't want to do anything.  I decided to

take him in to the pediatrician, just to rule out anything physical.  She

thinks he may have a sinus infection (stuffy nose, headache, throat looks a bit

irritated) and prescribes antibiotics.  Mind you, my son was diagnosed with

PANDAS at age 6, so I'm doing the big " ah ha! " .  So the next day we see the

psychiatrist for a regularly scheduled appt.  I explain the negative changes

and he wants to change meds.  He was on 50 mg Celexa and 2 mg of Abilify.  At

first he wanted to increase the Abilify.  I kind of balked, because it make him

sleepy and he has gained 22 pounds in the last 6 months on this stuff.  The

pdoc rolled his eyes and insisted Abilify is weight neutral - my pediatrician

says otherwise - every kid she's seen on it has gained excessively.  He is now

in the 5th percentile of height, and the 50th for weight.

So then the pdoc reconsiders and says he'

d like to supplement with another SSRI.  He wants to lower his Celexa to 40 mg

and add 25 mg of Luvox, plus the 2 mg of Abilify. For whatever reason, this

scares me.  So my question:  does anyone out there have a child on 2 different

SSRIs at the same time?  What about the PANDAs stuff?  Should I wait it out to

see if the antibiotic makes a difference in his behavior?  The pdoc offerred

this option too, but I was felt better having some kind of new plan in my pocket

in case there is no change.  Of course, the rest of the day, my son's behavior

was the best its been in weeks!  I'm trying to figure out if its safe to start

this new med or may be just unnecessary if the sinus infection triggered a

PANDAs reaction.  This has just been like hell and back for all of us the past

few weeks, and I just want to do the right thing to help him feel better.
