Well, I don't think I can help you with the work on this much, but I have the same problem with gaining weight eating more than a minimal to moderate amount of carbs. I have learned for me that there are many foods low/no carbs that I enjoy thoroughly and choose to focus on them. Although I have a weakness for ice cream & chocolate, I allow myself to indulge from time to time, guilt free, and no weight gain. I lost 30 lbs on low carb diet (eating what my heart desired and as much as I wanted). I feel better and haven't gained the weight back (3 yrs) even thought I integrate carbo foods when I want them. I have even "blown it" during christmas season....yup, no weight gain.

I realized and came to peace with the fact that my body (and taste buds) do much better on low carbs. I felt better and found myself not craving junk food or evening wanting them, except rarely.

In a nutshell, I realized the truth for me, what works best for me in this way. I eat mostly foods that are homemade and not processed. It's the processed foods high in carbs that get me, not the homemade ones in moderation. Everyone's body is a little different. Listen to your body and try out things observing how the different foods make you feel, not only emotionally/thinking, but in your body. It's about observation and accepting what is true for your individuals needs at the time...grow from there, alter as you go. No guilt. Don't fight what is. There is no set truth, regardless what the world says about low fat, or low carb. Find your own balance for you. When you aren't at war with food, you can have fun trying it out, feeling it, and deciding what feels good for you. The more you fight your truth, the more it's in your face fighting you back.

-- hi everyone

I found s book a few weeks ago and I have gotten a lot of help doing the work on varies uncomfortable feelings.I dont feel like this one is resolved for me,so I would appreciate any suggestions/thanksBelief:carbohydrates is bad for me,the body doesnt really need them and dont use it up,stores it as fat.Is it true?Often this is what happens when I eat carbs,I do gain weight. However there are people who dont,so it would be possible for me too then.I cant know for sure what it is that I gain weight from. How do I react when I think that thought?I feel frustrated and fearful, angry at myself for not being able to eat them and not gain weight.I feel like a failure and I feel like I am limited.Who would I be without that thought?not at war with food/carbs and myself.Happily eating whatever. But perhaps overweight?Cant know that for sure, only that I have gained in the past.I want to be free and at peace with carbs.I judge myself as a failure/I should get it that it is my thoughts that make me gain weight-not the carbs.Turnarounds:Carbohydrates is good for me,my body needs them and use them up.Doesn't turn them to fat.My thinking about carbs makes me store fat.I dont want to be free and at peace with carbs?I am not a failure and I shouldnt get it that it is my thoughtsIt helped a little bit doing this,I feel like it's not finished thou.Help..

Ilene,

Welcome to the wonderful world of private practice! It can also be wacky, and wax and wane though mostly a wealth of warmth making this work so worthwhile. (the writer in me gets carried away sometimes!)

I'd like to share with you my thoughts on two of the things you listed, sources for forms and need, and basic start-up needs. After making my own assessment form based on the one from Childbirth Graphics I finally decided after about 10 yr to purchase Pat 's package on CD and am so glad I did. I did NCR form from her bill form and use the assessment and evaluation form and questionnaire. I had already made up my own consent for tx but use her referral form for parents to submit to insurance as well as the bill itself. There are other forms on her CD, as well. I have my own rather generic care plan which I modify according to specific case.

In addition, I have a handout for each type of supplementation, give several handouts based on specific presenting problem, some from LLL, some from Diane Weissinger (I paid her for her packet of handouts a long while back), some from the internet. Moms seem to appreciate the handouts to refer to and I feel it's vital for them to have instructions on use of any equipment and which I find they do not get in hospital; eg finger feeding, use of shield and weaning from, etc. I also give moms internet resources, usually kellymom, and will email them appropriate resources that I have tagged already, eg tongue tie articles--saves paper waste.

As far as supplies, I have a baby weigh scale that I rent, have 20 cc syringes and 5 fr infant feeding tubing, peridontal syringes for filling a nipple shield when baby won't suck otherwise (it works like magic, espec for the baby who hasn't been to breast and appropriately needs a shield), nipple shields, both Medela and Ameda, pump parts and different sized flanges (I don't rent pumps), Hazelbaker finger feeders, SNS, Lact-Aid, breast shells. I can go months without using any equipment but when it's needed it's timely to have things available and be able to show their use directly.

Feel free to contact me privately and best of luck--the babies and moms you'll see are so fortunate.
