Guest guest
Men with Down syndrome are sterile, I believe. From: Multiples-DS [mailto:Multiples-DS ] On Behalf Of CaylorSent: Sunday, May 29, 2011 10:13 AMTo: Multiples-DS Subject: Sterilization My daughter is 22 with a lot of health issues. She is in a relationship for 2 years now to a great guy who also has down syndrome. If she was to get pregnant it would be a tubel pregnancy and she wouldn't make it. She is also on a blood thinner for a mitral valve replacement. The state of Pa is telling me she can't have this surgery done. I now have to get a lawyer and fight the state on this. Does anyone have any experience or advise that would help me.Mom to elisha 22 ds. Karissa 20 Kelsey 17 and Mason
Guest guest
Is it a full hysterectomy that they won't allow? I wonder if you could do an "end run" around the system by having her get a endometrial ablation. . . it is so much less invasive, NOT surgery and yet by cauterizing the lining of the uterus, pregnancy becomes impossible. There are a lot of reasons women get an ablation. . . "too heavy" periods, etc. When I had mine, the doctors wanted to be very clear that I understood I could never again have children. In fact, I've never had even any spotting since, and that was 8 or 9 years ago.I have thought about this option for my own daughter, but she is only 11 and hasn't even had her first period, so it's too early to really plan, but it has been on my mind. Guest guest
He should be sterile maybe it would be not necessary for her. Guest guest
There are 2 documented cases of men with DS fathering children. Is birth control a good option for her? Guest guest
I too have had the endometrial ablation. I still have regular monthly periods but they are much more manageable. It was to my understanding that not all males with down syndrome are sterile but that it was only presumed due to lack of medical literature on the matter (I believe there is at least one documented case of a male with down syndrome reproducing). , mom to Nicala (learning disability, bronchiectasis, chronic lung disease, etc) & (ds, adhd, autism) 14, 12, & 5. Guest guest
Male children born with down syndrome are not born sterile. I spoke to a specialist about that. Guest guest
I'm coming in very late on this, but I want to know what the state is saying. Is it that PA will not pay for an operation, or that the state is acting as guardian for the girl, and neither she nor her parents have any say in this? If it is the latter reason, I think there are plenty of pro-bono law groups who would be interested in taking it on. From what you say, the girl's health is at risk if she becomes pregnant.
