Guest guest
Where in Central NY? I'm in "down state" NY on Long Island but I went to school in Central NY and my SIL is a speech therapist in Syracuse, NY. Let me know where and what you need to know and I can help. xo maggie Mom to Olivia '01 and & '05 (IDs w/ DS) www.walkonthehappyside.blogspot.com To: DSTNI ; multiples-ds <Multiples-DS >Sent: Fri, September 10, 2010 11:06:15 AMSubject: OT: Central NY Hello, Are there any families living in central NY? Guest guest
Syracuse is central and we might relocate to Rome, NY which is about 45 minutes east of Syracuse. Just wondering if overall, if this is an inclusive environment with good services available? I've heard NY is great, but is it great away from big cities? I've heard that many teachers in Rome come from Syracuse. My SIL in a ST as well, but isn't active currently. Thanks for your input Maggie! Where in Central NY? Guest guest
NY has been great for granting services though I've heard with the economy there's been a reduction (but that's true for everywhere I suppose). Upstate is better than downstate for inclusion efforts. (Nassau and Manhatten are the worst in NY State for Inclusion thereby bringing the entire state down to 2nd worst in the country for inclusion.) SUNY College at Cortland, NY is about an hour Southwest of Rome, NY (where I went to school) and specializes in degrees in education/special education. That might be a great place to inquire about inclusion efforts in the surrounding areas. They would know b/c they'd be placing graduates in all the school districts in the area. My college boyfriend was from Rome, NY. Know the area well. I'll check with my SIL (though she's not necessarily an "inclusionist" she might know organizations you can contact). I'll let you know what I find out. xo maggie www.walkonthehappyside.blogspot.com To: Multiples-DS Sent: Fri, September 10, 2010 2:12:56 PMSubject: Re: OT: Central NY Syracuse is central and we might relocate to Rome, NY which is about 45 minutes east of Syracuse. Guest guest
I was actually looking for NYS reimbursement programs for someone else with a child with disabilities (to pay for diapers for her 9-year-old son) and came across this link: http://www.omr.state.ny.us/ws/ws_central_resources.jsp This is the Rome office for OMRDD in NYS (now called OPWDD: Office for People With Developmental Disabilities to accommodate the Lose the "R" Word campaign). They provide various support and services for folks with developmental delays and their families who are school age and above. I've also reached out to an old friend in Rome to find out more specifics in the school district. If I get a name, I'll forward for you to follow up. xo maggie www.walkonthehappyside.blogspot.com To: Multiples-DS Sent: Fri, September 10, 2010 2:12:56 PMSubject: Re: OT: Central NY Syracuse is central and we might relocate to Rome, NY which is about 45 minutes east of Syracuse.
