While she waslearning basic academics, she missed out on the social opportunities thatteach youngsters how to make friends and build relationships. That's where the “self-contained classroom†concept of specialeducation failed her, her mother believes. Even though attended some I dont know about this. I Just now posted that I am worried about my son and his lack of relationships. He is Aspergers and ADHD, in regular classes, ALL regular except for a Study Skills Study hall, which is SE study hall as you can talk and move to different places for help like a math lab if needed etc. So, as you can see, he is not in any type of self contained class. Additionally, he is in honors classes , two of them. He is in the groups for working in groups ( alot of the classes do group work, which he is not that great with ) and he is around kids at lunch and so forth. He has opportunities, and he is also on the chess team and goes to chess club and so forth. However, this does not seem to matter much in giving him any social advancement of any kind. He might as well be in a self contained setting or with all of those with Aspergers all day long, as it would be the same situation socially. However, he does come home and tells us some conversations that he has at lunch with kids and it is pretty funy sometimes the things he says back to them and the ways that he is learning about how others think. So, in that aspect, he is absorbing the social world around him, but he is not a part of it per se. Almost like he is here on this planet, but not of this planet. Make sense? That is what Aspergers is about ! in IL
