As we move into the new year, our second annual day of awareness regarding the use of the word "retard" is fast approaching. This coming March 3 will be the second End the R-Word Day, a day to engage schools and communities about the issues of intellectual disability and the hate speech and social discrimination directed towards people with intellectual disabilities. Special Olympics, along with Best Buddies, is calling young people to host awareness events to engage their schools and communities. More resources, including t-shirts and posters, will be made available soon through www.specialolympics.org. We will also be using Facebook to engage as many people as possible. In our first End the R-Word Day, we engaged over 40 universities, 300 high schools, and 16,000 people on Facebook. This year, our preliminary goals are to engage at least 75 universities, 1000 high schools, and 50,000 people on Facebook. As we move forward, more information and resources will be available through the Special Olympics website, www.r-word.org, and through this Facebook Cause. I encourage everyone to use these tools and your own creativity to provide your own unique contribution to this year's End the R-Word Day, 3.3.2010.
