I guess we should begin at our local levels and see if we can get our sheriff's departments behind us. Perhaps the Governor's Council might have some insight for us on how to move forward. I think this is a priority project!

Anything like this has to be driven by grass-roots interest, and funded

in the community. Whoever wants to organize the project locally

probably should contact the originators and find out how their program

has been successfully set up.

Adding Alzheimers and brain injury patients to the autism families

would make the project more efficient and less expensive per capita.

This can be done through coordination with Shepherd Center and the

Centers for Independent Living (like disABILITY Link in Atlanta).

Mark_@... is the advocacy coordinator at Shepherd

center and would be a good contact to begin with.

The problem with local agencies is that they are so numerous, and

perform different tasks, according to each jurisdiction. For

example, where we live, if your child is missing in the city limits,

the city police respond. If he or she is missing outside of the city

limits, the county police will handle it. The local Sheriff's office

handles Court services, warrants, and the jail. I would suggest

approaching GEMA, or the State Sheriff's Association. GEMA (Georgia

Emergency Management Agency) handles School Safety Prevention (e.g.

Columbine situations) and is also the agency who puts out Levi's

Calls when children are missing (the Georgia equivalent to an Amber

Alert.) They are able to obtain grants for law enforcement purposes,

and have staff available State-wide to train local officials and

personnel. The State Sheriff's Association would be a good source to

contact all Sheriffs, from all of the counties.

Our city police department is very progressive. They are constantly

receiving grants to update services and train personnel. I have

considered contacting them about security bracelets, but their

jurisdiction is limited. Our county police do not have the

resources or the numbers to engage in many " cutting edge " programs.

We are in the midst of elections for a new Sheriff. I think GEMA is

over all of the 911(local) Emergency Agencies, but I am not sure. I

used to know the Director of GEMA, but he was axed by the new

Republican Governor when Purdue came in to office.
