Guest guest
Hi everyone, I got a call today from a mom who recently weaned her almost 5 week old baby. She had mastitis at week 3 and decided to stop breastfeeding; continued pumping, gradually going longer between sessions until she completely stopped pumping last week. She is now very concerned because her previously everted nipples seem to have inverted (dimpled in the middle). She says she can draw them out with manual manipulation, but they go back to being inverted. Mom had breast augmentation several years ago, but scar is under breast (in the fold), not anywhere near areola. Went to see OB who Rxed ultrasound and ref to me, saying she'd never seen that. Well, uh, I've never seen it either! I told mom I would research and see if anything came up. In the meantime mentioned to her that maybe breast shells might help, or a Latch Assist, or reverse pressure softening technique--anything that might draw nipples out; that possibly drawing them out several times a day might " remind " tissue to keep everted shape... Things I'm wondering about: 1. Could this be related to implants? Doc says they feel fine. 2. Could this have to do with duct involution? I asked her if any other areas were dimpled, or if skin looked like an orange peel, and she said no. I'm assuming (hopefully rightfully so!) that doc would've noted any obvious red-flags for cancer. If any of you have seen/heard of this, or think you have some helpful ideas about this situation, please share. Any input is appreciated.
